As a nurse looking after children from newborns through to teenagers it is important to encourage parents to maintain a positive relationship with their children whilst in hospital. Family centred care has become very important in the hospital setting. In years past children who were admitted to hospital were left in the hands of the doctors and nurses and parents were only allowed to visit during visiting hours (Shields etal 1998). By allowing parents to be present during a procedure or even during an emergency has shown that there is a better, faster recovery rate for the child (Shields et al 1998). The Children’s Health Queensland, which stems out of the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital (LCCH) and are the guidelines of practice that are used in outlying hospitals across Queensland have four key principles of family centred care. Ryan’s rule is used by parents, caregivers and families when they believe the patient is getting worse, not doing well or not improving. The parents firstly talk to the doctor or nurse regarding their concerns and if they are not happy with the response they can then talk to the nurse in charge regarding the issue and if they are still not happy they can call the 13 health number asking them to activate a Ryan’s rule clinical review and a Ryan’s rule nurse or doctor will review the patient and help as appropriate. With this in place parents can feel comfort in knowing that there are options if their concerns are not being heard.
