In order to guide professionals on a topic, a deep knowledge about said material is required. This skill will have to be constantly updated, because advances in technology and new discoveries in a variety of fields, can leave your expertise behind.
Also, knowing about adult development and learning is extremely important because adults will be your target of improvement. It is important to understand about thinking processes and different types of learners, in order to present effective training to the teachers. Just as students, not everyone learns in the same way, and then add the stress factor of any given situation that such adult might be undergoing, and you have wasted valuable time and effort. Knowledge about multiple methods to deliver any training will be needed.
Additionally, leadership skills are a must. In one way or another, people will be looking at you as a model to follow, something very similar to a mentor. One should then play by the same rules that you are preaching about. Change will be something that will be present, and understanding about it and knowing how to cope with it are important. The instructional leader should also be able to communicate the goals and vision of the institution, and sometimes the only way to achieve this, is by making sure that you live by them. When teaching and training, the content should be delivered in a very direct, clear and intentional way, in order to maximize the impact of the lesson. Creative skills in order to prepare engaging presentations, and good oratory strategies to communicate them are a valuable asset. Some have these talents, but surely they can be also learned and developed with
