A Good Friend Book Report
“Friends show their love in times of trouble, not in happiness.” Eric Calhoune, whoses best friend, Sarah Byrnes, has been put in the hospital because she refuses to speak. Sarah Byrnes, who was burned when she was three, has been Eric's friend even when his heavy weight made him an outcast at school. After seeing no improvement in Sarah Byrnes' behavior, Eric turns to Dale Thornton, who used to bully him and Sarah Byrnes in middle school. Through Dale, Eric learns the shocking truth about Sarah Byrnes' past and has to decide whether to keep his promise by keeping quiet, or betraying his friends to try and get help for Sarah Byrnes. I believe that Eric is a good friend because he cares about her, he would do anything to keep her safe, and …show more content…
I say this because Eric told Lemry about the letter and Sarah’s dad to keep her safe even if it meant Sarah hating him. The book says, “I’d rather have her hate my guts and be safe than love me and be alone. I handed Lemry the letter.” This shows that Eric would do anything to keep Sarah safe.
Lastly I believe that Eric is a good friend because he stayed loyal to his and Sarah’s friendship no matter what. I say this because he ate twice as much as he normally would just to stay fat for Sarah. I know this because the book says “ Now Sarah Byrnes is here. My best friend. I stayed fat a whole year for her.” This shows that Eric stayed fat because he didn't want to lose their friendship. Eric cares about Sarah, he would do anything to keep her safe, and he has stayed loyal to their friendship when Sarah wasn't there. All of these are great reasons why Eric is an amazing friend. He is somebody that you would want to be by your side when things get rough or just to be by your side to make you laugh. He is always cracking jokes and making you smile. And when it come to a serious issue, he will never leave your side no matter what. Everybody deserves a friend like Eric

When Sarah told Eric the truth about her burns, he went against her wishes by telling Mrs. Lemry, his swim coach, but it was still a good decision. Eric did this because he knew that he had to help Sarah but he did not know how to. “It boiled down to this: Somebody a whole lot smarter than me and Sarah Byrnes needs to help keep her man off her and to get a start on the life she got a glimpse of writing that letter. If I didn’t do something, Sarah Byrnes would either get dragged back by her dad, or she’d run away and be alone. The letter was clear: shaky as I was, I was her only friend. I’d rather have her hate my guts and be safe than love me and be alone” (131). This shows how deeply Eric cares about Sarah but also that he knows that he cannot help her by himself. He knows she doesn’t have much time before something bad happens to her. “’I know one thing,’ I said finally. ‘Sarah Byrnes hates no knowing worse than anything. She has to okay anything we do. And the first thing I’ll have to do is make it okay hat I’ve told you everything’” (143). When Eric says this, it shows that even though he didn’t get Sarah’s permission to tell Mrs. Lemry, he still acknowledges that if there is any ways for him to help her, she has to agree and not feel like she has lost control of her life.…

If we look at Eric as a character, we should be able to associate him with a certain conscience, which, when you think about it, is what the Inspector tried to do; get the characters to appeal to their conscience. Now Eric, along with Sheila, both give real, emotional responses to the death of Eva/Daisy, whereas Gerald and Mr/Mrs Birling didn't. Talk about that; surely as responsible, wealthy adults, they should be the mature ones, accepting responsibility and taking the blame. Yet it took the youngest child to accept fault.…

One of the main features that make Eric is an interesting character is that he is quite secretive about his life, so that when the inspector questions Eric the Birling’s are in for a huge surprise. They learn that he is an alcoholic, has stolen money from his father and has gotten a lower class girl pregnant. During this time period the rich didn’t really associate with the poor; so his family, especially his mother, are shocked when he reveals the news.…

John Wyndham, the author of "The Chrysalids" is an amazing writer with many topics in mind. One of them would be friendship. Wyndham has based this book on the different views toward friendship and how all the characters have a different approach on the topic. Virgil Byrnes (Sarah's Dad) is at the hospital that Sarah is "recovering" at when he puts Eric in a Corner and interrogates him about Sarah's condition."He glances back at Sarah Byrnes, then back to me. 'She says anything to you?' ' No sir'." (Crutcher 64) I think that Eric shows encephalitis courage by tending up to an adult that he doesn't want to know that Sarah Byrnes is faking her illness.…

Though Eric doesn't know what the hamster is named he did give me the names of the cats, They are, Noel,…

When I asked Google to define a friend it gave me 82,300,000 related results, but when I asked the definition of a good friend it only showed 47,000,000 results. This proved how people tend to have more challenges in characterizing what a good friend is, probably because it is harder to find one. Generally, a friend is described as a person whom one knows and with whom one has a bond of mutual affection, typically exclusive of sexual or family relations. Almost every single one of us will immediately nod in agreement to this definition and explain how your good friend never fails to make you smile. They are the ones who support every action you made, every word you said, and every decision you take.…
