Suzie is a 40 year-old woman that has been living in a homeless shelter for the past year. She is single and has never had children. She is trying to find work in order to move out of the shelter and obtain health insurance. She has not had a well-woman exam in several years and has never had a mammogram. I chose Suzie from the client list because I am honestly unsure which HSC concentration I would like to ultimately pursue. I do know that I am and always will be passionate about philanthropic endeavors and helping those in need. That being said, I think that medical care is a social determinant factor that can relate to my concentration regardless of what path I choose. The social determinant factors that I see to be affecting Suzie in this situation include: environment, socioeconomic status and medical care.…

Working as a support worker for young adults, among other responsibilities, solely requires maintenance of a safe environment for the young adults to be cared for, while promoting wellbeing. Maintaining a safe environment involves a series of inter-twined activities which include monitoring and reporting the activities of the individuals in care on a day-to-day base. Considering that the activities are carried out by multiple individuals in different placements within the United Kingdom, with different attitudes and operation patterns, the need for regulation to foster uniformity and consistency within all organisations has not been ignored. The National Occupational Standard covers all fields of job roles at diverse levels of responsibility, identifying and expressing the most appropriate and generally acceptable practice in specific fields, bringing…

The relevance of this struggle is significant to future work as a social worker. According to Cox (2008), there is a rise of inequality throughout America. As seen in the videos, it is important as social workers to understand and acknowledge the effects of mountaintop removal throughout Appalachia. This struggle results in implications and urgency for all individuals, especially those in the Appalachian, rural, and small town environments. Innovation has an important role in the inclusion of social policies (Pennsylvania municipalities, n.d.). According to NASW (2008), one of a social worker’s responsibilities is to enhance the well-being of all individuals. In other words, social workers improve the quality of life of individuals through research, policy, and direct practice.…

Unless otherwise cited, the career information presented in this paper was obtained from O8Net on-line (National Center for O*Net Development, 20??). Through the O*Net assessments I received a 28 in the category of social. The social category was the highest number compared to the next high of 14 in investigative. After looking through careers in the social category I felt the need to further research mental health and substance abuse social workers. I currently work in the field of mental health and substance abuse as a crisis counselor. In the 19th century, the U.S. was faced with a spate of immigrants (Ehrenreich, 2014). In fact, immigration patterns in the early 19th century included high levels of immigration from across the world, while legislation by the late 19th century limited immigration from many parts of world and encouraged immigration from Europe. Meanwhile, land was abundant in the early 19th century, leading to relatively high wages and a labor shortage. Yet, by the turn of the 20th century, industrialization had decreased the need for labor in agricultural sectors, while unions began to become popular, indicating a trend away from labor shortage and towards poor working conditions and poverty for many…

This assignment is a critical reflection on the in-class roleplay demonstration where I played the role of a social worker from the Department of Human Services (DHS) and another batch-mate played the role of Marika, the client. A social worker is bound to have a complete understanding of the objectives and goals of the process of counselling so as to be able to meet the client needs. (Geldard, 1989)…

You, see the experience that influence my decision to enter the field of Social Work originated from situations that my siblings and I endured in our upbringing. I am from a low-income neighborhood in Chesapeake, Virginia growing up my mother was a single parent of three girls, she did not work and received benefits from the local human services to support us. Although my mother was unemployed and living off government assistance, she was an educated woman. My mother graduated from college with a degree in nursing, but was never able to go forth and…
