THE PROBLEM AND REVIEW OF LITERATURE
Introduction
By choice or by some unavoidable circumstances people procrastinate at one point or another. Reasons for procrastination vary in different situations; some of these reasons are legally acceptable and legally binding, some reasons are brought about by the interference of nature, and some reasons are beyond the control of an individual. In some exceptional instances, people may decide to procrastinate in order for them to have more time for preparations and, therefore, get better results in the end. In such a case, procrastination may serve a person in a positive way if the gain and loss from such procrastination breaks even at least.
But, for whatever reason why a person procrastinates, there are some things, mostly intangible things, that are lost and wasted in the process and can never be brought back. Edward Young (1683-1765) once said that “Procrastination is the thief of time.” Though it has been said a long time ago, its essence still holds true to this generation. It is very true that there is so much more that can be accomplished if not for the procrastination that causes delays, waste of time, waste of time, waste of effort, and waste of money.
Procrastination seeps into every sector of society and victimizes no one in particular, that is, everyone is susceptible to procrastination if there is no determination not to give in to its enticing call. Even in the academic sector, people in the pedagogical field procrastinate in pursuing their graduate studies and students procrastinate in every possible way from doing their assignments to completing their on-the-job training.
The researchers have been motivated by the above scenario to undertake a study on academic procrastination among Hotel and Restaurant Management students of the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA (UPHSD-Las Pinas), the causes of their procrastination and the effects on their lives as students.
