Achievement: Management and Traditional Career Path
The achievement that I am most proud of is my successful migration from the technical line to a managerial position. During the first year of my career as a programmer, I realized that this was not what I enjoyed doing, that I would never be the best in it and that the progress in this path would be very slow. The opportunities I got in my new company were challenging. I started with managing small teams of 5 people and within a year I was given the responsibility to build the new department of the organization from scratch. I was responsible for the organization of operations for this department. This task included securing equipment, hiring and training, handling daily operations as well as managing the clients we had. I also had to look out for new opportunities to increase our clientele. It was almost as if I was running a small business.

I took a risk when I decided not to follow the traditional career path taken up my most Engineering graduates. But this accomplishment has reinforced my confidence in my ability to face business and personal challenges up front, to handle tremendous responsibility and to be in consistent pursuit of

There are many accomplishments in my life of which I am proud, however there are two for which I am especially proud. Those being, having the opportunity to play varsity shortstop in high school, and having good enough grades to be nominated for, and to be admitted into, the National Honor Society. These accomplishments make me proud because they are goals that I was able to set and accomplish for myself. These are successes that not everyone can say that they have achieved.…

The first would be my administrative tasks as a Resident Assistant. I consistently turned in papers, forms, and completed task on time or before the deadline. This also included emailing and updating my supervisor about any resident conflicts or situations that occurred. I feel that this is an accomplishment because I was able to keep the line of communication open to my supervisor and ensured that all information was given in a timely manner. Another accomplishment I achieved over the past semester was being flexible to my other Resident Assistants. There were many times when last minute another Resident Assistant needed to switch duty days or had an emergency situation and I was able to cover for them. For example, during the semester one Resident Assistant needed to go to the hospital last minute and needed someone to cover. Despite it being last minute and on a Friday night, I was able to take the duty day. This is an accomplishment because I felt like I was a vital member of the team and that people could rely on me to step up to the plate when need…

Being able to volunteer and help out recent tornado victims, that recently had their house destroyed because of this disaster, paved the way towards my discoveries at an early stage of my life. By rebuilding the former residents home back to its glory showed what I truly desired in life, and granted me access to a career choice that I have not yet experienced before. Planning and repurposing newly found knowledge showed how people can come together to build something significant in either the short or long term ahead, by granting me the opportunity to pick what is necessary to get the job done as efficient as we could in the time allotted to our group during the trip. Allowing to peak my interest in the field of engineering at this moment on, and research on the variety type of engineering careers offered around the country all…

With this new realization, I also realized I never really wanted to be a Aerodynamics Engineer. It was just me getting caught up in a world wind of excitement and wonder and not realizing just how much it took to become something like that. It was soon after this, I decided that instead of an aerodynamics engineer, I'd be a computer technician. As I had always had a knack for electronics, whenever something that ran off of a battery or power source went array, I could always fix it when everyone else's attempts failed. Naturally it seemed like a perfect fit to me to try and major in a career I like and I am good at, if only I'd have known that the summer would bring a big move three hours away and with it yet another goal change. The move saw me travel from the quaint little tourist town of Cambria just minutes from the beach, to a much larger and more robust town of Porterville where the nearest beach was three and half hours drive…

The thing that comes to mind that I would say makes me the proudest is working so hard all those years in high school to get good grades just so I could get into the best college in Florida. The day I got accepted into University of Florida was the day I felt proudest of all my accomplishments in high school. I would not say it was easy though, I managed to maintain my high GPA while holding a job, participating in sports, and even doing a lot of chores most kids would not even think about doing. I can remember when my family had me help fix our house after a waterline busted and flooded the entire house. After school and football practice I would come home and start working on fixing our house. No matter how tired I was I did not quit until the job was done even if it meant staying up late with my mom working on the project at hand. Now I know by no means necessary that this is a miracle, but I feel that it is something I am proud of. Being able to accomplish my goal no matter how many tasks I have to do. So I know now that I can handle anything that comes my way no matter how hard it may seam and how tiresome I may be I will not let up until I am done. The day I received my acceptance letter to the University of Florida was proof of the hard work I had done and that I was going to get where I wanted as long as I keep up my hard work.…

Purpose – This paper aims to explore the influence of a range of factors on the career choice of management students in India. The importance of different individuals in the family and at work in making career choices among these students is also to be explored. In addition, the study seeks to address the relationship of the cultural values of individualism-collectivism and the protean/conventional career orientations of MBA students from India, with factors as well as people influencing the choice of a career. Design/methodology/approach – Participants consisted of 93 students from India entering management, who were starting their first year of the two-year full time MBA program. Self-administered questionnaires were used to gather data on factors and types of relationships influencing career choice, individualism/collectivism, and protean/conventional career orientation. Findings – “Skills, competencies, and abilities” was the most important factor and “father” was the most significant individual influencing the career choice of Indian management students. The predominant cultural value was collectivism, although the students demonstrated individualist tendencies in some contexts. A protean orientation guided the career orientation of these students. Research limitations/implications – The data were collected only from one management institute in India. Originality/value – Empirical research on factors and types of relationships influencing career choice, and their correlates, has not been conducted among Indian students. The paper addresses this issue and the study has implications for career counseling. Keywords Careers, Career guidance, National cultures, Students, India Paper type…
