‘Alien’ Promotional Poster Analysis
It is important in any media text for the encoder to use many different devices top help them in producing an advertisement, in order to target a certain audience. In this essay I will dissect and analyse the content of the media text: ‘An Alien Legacy’ boxed set. I will be looking at the purpose of the text, and how it would appeal to its target audience. I will also be looking at the different technical devices used by commenting on the featured denotations produced by the camera angles, colour etc.
The purpose of the advertisement is to make people aware that the ‘Alien’ films are available to buy as part of a box set rather than being bought as separate individual products. The purpose of the poster may also be to make people more aware of the fact there is more than 1 film in the series. The audience for the advertisement is a specific niche audience. The target audience is the fans of the ‘Alien’ series. However, the broader target audience is stereotypically for males due to the hints at the scientific-genre. It would be incorrect to assume that the demographic is male as the protagonist is a strong female which may attract more of a female audience than most science-fiction films of this type. The age of target audience is also quite wide. This is because a long period of time will have passed from when the first films of the series was made to the last. The encoder had targeted the audience by using certain colours and images that represent the film and the specific genre.
Firstly, I will talk about the central image on the poster. The central image is of an egg and is in the prime optical area of the whole text. The egg had connotations of a new life but it is made clear in the image that the egg isn’t an ordinary egg that we would usually think of.     As technology has grown immensely in the past century, we have seen the rise of many movies surrounding this topic. Movies ranging from family friendly flicks about the bond between a fighting machine and boy while others explore the science behind technological advances in educational films. However, the large majority seem to highlight the morbid possibility of what could happen when technology turns against us. These examples are found all throughout the media, but are dramatized to a whole new degree on movie posters. In my case, I am specifically referencing both the 2001: a space odyssey poster as well as the recently released Ex Machina poster. Both posters are meant to pitch the idea of where technology is going to be taking us. Yet, in the 2001: space odyssey the message is lacking and bordering on tangent to the movie in comparison to Ex Machina. On one side we see a poster about an epic adventure through space, but is conveyed in a poor way that takes away from the enjoyment of a topic such as space. Whereas on the other hand, we have the Ex Machina poster conveying a dark and eerie feeling that sells the movie exactly for what it is. Though Ex Machina is a clear winner here, to truly understand such rationale we must deeply analyze the visual rhetoric in both posters.…
