Alternate Ending To Build A Fire
Just then, just as I had devised, the snake pursued after me when next thing I heard was the sound of massive eruptions. BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Whirling around, I saw that snake was gone. It had clumsily coasted over the bronze tiles, exploding it into a giant cloud of ashes. My heart hammered in my chest. I couldn't believe it had worked. We were free! When all of a sudden, I felt the searing heat of the flames inching near my back.
“Jared the second lever, it’s unlocked!” Gemma cried. I stared back at the pile of maidens. They were trembling, draped all over the sculpture, clutching for dear life. Panting with exhaustion, I rushed back towards them and scooped up the maiden who the snake had snatched. She was still alive, but feeble and in pain,

That’s all it says. The other part is missing.”
Looking around frantically I suddenly I remembered.
“The final step is to break the hourglass! Quick, break the hourglass!” I roared.
Without question, the maidens immediately obeyed, tearing the glass from the statue’s grip and tossing it to the floor. Instantly the glass shattered to pieces.
“Good!” I shouted, jumping closer to the statue as fire enclosed all around.
We all waited in silence, staring at the pile of sand, but nothing was forthcoming. We were still trapped.
“I don’t understand. The man said that was the final step!”
“What do we do?!” the maiden’s cried.
Then, like lightning, my eyes shot to the tilted head of the fountain, it was no longer working. No longer was water issuing from the mouth. My mind clicked. I remembered the man had said something about, ‘the swallower or drinker of time,’ that’s what we needed to do, dump the sand into the mouth! Rapidly, I bent down and scooped a handful.
“Quick, bring this to the top and pour it into the mouth, hurry!”
The maiden's nodded, struggling to pass the handful. Gently, I laid the maiden down and repeated this action, scooping and passing

“C’mon C’mon C’mon,” I rushed.
Gemma and I were the last to jump. With my encouragement, she quickly dropped, and now I was the only one left. Hastily, I adjusted my backpack and took one last sweeping look, no more maidens in sight. Giving an exhale, I took a step out and immediately I felt myself falling. When, within seconds, my body plopped into a liquid sluggish substance, and all was dark.
The maidens shrieked as they slipped and sloshed through the muck. Reaching out my arms, I felt a cold cobblestone wall. My fingers gripped one of the rocks, and I hoisted myself up. Where were we now? Urgently, I wiped a hand across the stone wall and reached into my backpack, pulling out a flashlight. I flicked the switch, and a beam of white light instantly shot out, illuminating a view of the maidens stumbling around in a greenish sludge. A few held their arms to their face, to shield the light from their eyes.
“Is everyone alright?” I said, moving the beam.
“Oh, I see a celestial light!” one

As I ran, I heard my footsteps echo through the streets. I had no idea where I was going, only that I needed to get far, far, far away from the castle. I remember his last-minute parting words- barely a whisper- “I will give you a one day head start, and then I will find you.” I remember the echo as I bolted down the stairs, running as fast as I could.…

Her blouse was gone, replaced by a simple black dress. As soon as she got up to look around, she noticed that the environment around her was entirely different than that of the drive-in restuarant or her house. The sky was black, encompassed by large glowing rings of what looked to be ancient texts, and on its horizon was a rather large-looking moon. Connie felt oddly calm in this place, the red grass contrasted nicely with the dark sky. As she scanned her surrounding she found a path leading down.…

The last of the ripples had just dissipated when I got to the spot he had disappeared. I took a gulp of air and dove under the brownish surface. I tried to open my eyes, but the filthy water stung and I couldn't see more than an inch in front of me. I felt around blindly and frantically.…

The turbid water gently engulfed her leather boots, tarnishing them more and more with every step. The street lights issued a lambent, orange glow into the surrounding area, accompanied by an ominous feeling that threaded through her every breath. The familiar throbbing of her pulse in her ears, the very testament of her existence, was slowly retreating. Instead, she could feel her anxious heart clasping the fabric of her chest tighter with every street corner. Rubbish floated aimlessly about the empty street as the moon sailed across the night sky like a ghostly galleon.…

But unlike a prisoner who was chained against his will, he trailed after her retreating figure eagerly, his entire awareness wrapped up in a burning need to serve his new mistress, to please her, to do everything possible to bring her satisfaction. He was hers and hers alone; that was all he needed to know. She faced him again when they reached solid ground, suddenly reaching out to wrap a warm hand around his cold, damp fingers. There was a flurry of words he didn't understand, followed by a brilliant flash of gold in her green eyes, and then the world was spinning, turning, whirling past his bewildered gaze so swiftly that he could distinguish nothing beyond splashes of color and the frigid wind that chilled his naked…

The shock was so bad not a screech escaped my lips. As I rush outside in a panic, a dark figure catches my eyes, the massacre also in full sight. My adolescent legs strain as I continue along the path aimlessly and my stomach rumbles in emptiness as I realise, I left without food. How can one think of such things at a time like that? I most certainly didn't. Just minutes before leaving for an awesome party one doesn’t remember to do a lot of things and now the only thing dwelling in my gut is the sore pain that was the increasing hate for the cruel beings that have abandoned me here. Lost in my thoughts, my melancholic walking pattern is disrupted as my foot catches on a thick branch in the deceptive darkness and I fall swiftly face first into a small jagged rock. Dazed, I lift myself up from the ground and dust myself off. My left eyelid closes automatically as blood rolls down the top of my face. Cursing, I wipe my face with my white sleeve, soaking the cotton a blackish red instantly. The shock disperses and pain sets in, sharp agony mixed with a strange tingling sensation on my forehead.…

After giving the pile of old tree limbs she was pointing at a good second stare I saw it. There was a roof slightly sticking up from a mass of brush. I had lived right up the hill from this location for 9 years and had been down to the camp dozens of times, but never have I ever noticed this small roof that was roughly 100 meters away from the camp. We sprinted on through the scraggly brush, being pulled back on by plenty of branches and jumping over small creeks. Tumbling, jerking, and fleeing was pulling everyone back, but yet was pushing everyone forward. We stopped dead in our tracks after what felt like hours of sprinting and adjusted to the spontaneous sight that was in front of us, sending my eyes into…
