Whirling around, I saw that snake was gone. It had clumsily coasted over the bronze tiles, exploding it into a giant cloud of ashes. My heart hammered in my chest. I couldn't believe it had worked. We were free! When all of a sudden, I felt the searing heat of the flames inching near my back.
“Jared the second lever, it’s unlocked!” Gemma cried. I stared back at the pile of maidens. They were trembling, draped all over the sculpture, clutching for dear life. Panting with exhaustion, I rushed back towards them and scooped up the maiden who the snake had snatched. She was still alive, but feeble and in pain, …show more content…
That’s all it says. The other part is missing.”
Looking around frantically I suddenly I remembered.
“The final step is to break the hourglass! Quick, break the hourglass!” I roared.
Without question, the maidens immediately obeyed, tearing the glass from the statue’s grip and tossing it to the floor. Instantly the glass shattered to pieces.
“Good!” I shouted, jumping closer to the statue as fire enclosed all around.
We all waited in silence, staring at the pile of sand, but nothing was forthcoming. We were still trapped.
“I don’t understand. The man said that was the final step!”
“What do we do?!” the maiden’s cried.
Then, like lightning, my eyes shot to the tilted head of the fountain, it was no longer working. No longer was water issuing from the mouth. My mind clicked. “Quick, bring this to the top and pour it into the mouth, hurry!”
The maiden's nodded, struggling to pass the handful. Gently, I laid the maiden down and repeated this action, scooping and passing …show more content…
“C’mon C’mon C’mon,” I rushed.
Gemma and I were the last to jump. With my encouragement, she quickly dropped, and now I was the only one left. Hastily, I adjusted my backpack and took one last sweeping look, no more maidens in sight. Giving an exhale, I took a step out and immediately I felt myself falling. When, within seconds, my body plopped into a liquid sluggish substance, and all was dark.
The maidens shrieked as they slipped and sloshed through the muck. Reaching out my arms, I felt a cold cobblestone wall. My fingers gripped one of the rocks, and I hoisted myself up. Where were we now? Urgently, I wiped a hand across the stone wall and reached into my backpack, pulling out a flashlight. I flicked the switch, and a beam of white light instantly shot out, illuminating a view of the maidens stumbling around in a greenish sludge. A few held their arms to their face, to shield the light from their eyes.
“Is everyone alright?” I said, moving the beam.
“Oh, I see a celestial light!” one
