Americorps Reflection
AmeriCorps has been a great learning experience for me. In AmeriCorps we work to make the community safe and better. We do board up, clean up, leafleting, surveys, home safety assessment e.c.t. We get to meet new people every day. We also plan big board-up events occasionally. We had an AmeriCorps Member Celebration day on November 17th for getting 1 million members. We had to go to Lansing to participate in this celebration. There was almost 700 members there and they were only from Michigan. I didn’t know how big AmeriCorps was until that day. This celebration gave me opportunity to connect with new people. There were also several informative workshops, which gave me new perspective to look at few things differently. The workshops were the best part of …show more content…
I remember when we hosted the Make a difference day event for Thurgood Marshall. It was a busy day for all of us. It was also a big event. There were a lot of vacant houses in that area. Our job was to make a list of the vacant houses and to measure it for board-ups. Measuring it took about a week. Lighting observation was a challenge for some of us because we had to wait till dark to find out which light works so that we can write down the address. Some people didn’t like how we were going around the same area multiple times because they didn’t know what we were trying to do. After that some of us had to drive around morning and afternoon to find out the most common routes that everyone takes to go and from school. I couldn’t participate in that because I had school the same time. On the big event day, we secured 10 vacant properties, cleared three blocks of trash, removed a block of graffiti from a vacant property, and created visible safe routes signs. We hit some rough patches on the way but we all worked together to overcome it. It was a very long and exhausting day but we all were happy because we all felt the joy of making a difference in the

Volunteering for service hours changed my outlook on life. I worked with the Hydrocephalus Association in both eleventh and twelfth grade. The Hydrocephalus Association focuses on three things community, clarity, and cure. Hydrocephalus is a condition defined by an abnormal, excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities of the brain. Some people with this condition can live a normal life being unnoticeable while other have difficulties. The association works on awareness to find a cure, clarity in helping families further understand the condition, and a community which will always be supportive. Service hours can sometimes be a hassle but once I started volunteering with that association it became fun because I was…

It was an amazing feeling to give to the community in that way. I was selected as the master of ceremony for our yearly Veterans Day Assembly this year also. It was an honor to be able to lead the assembly and make sure that the veterans were honored for their true acts of bravery. Also through National Honor Society, I planned a Red Out at a basketball game, a Cardiac Ball, and a 3-on-3 tournament in order to spread awareness and collect donations for the American Heart Association. We ended up raising 2,000 dollars for such a great cause!…

I served as a student volunteer for Hammer and Nails a non-profit organization that works to serve the community with the mission of improving the quality of lives for low-income families through home repair. Most of the home owners in Canton, Ohio faced financial hardship and could not fund the extensive repair and renovation that their homes needed and thus relied on volunteer services for help. Through my time spent with Hammer and Nails I savored learning about the families within the community and how their lives were impacted by the local volunteers throughout many years. I enjoyed helping in the office with administrative work and with home renovations through painting and carpeting. I learned that a healthy life begins at home, and a clean and well-constructed home contributes to good physical and mental health.…

For instance, in the spring 2016 semester I volunteered with the American Red Cross and I encouraged other residents to volunteer as a community service program. Another program that I executed was titled, "Can you survive?" The program took place around Halloween, so I included a mysterious theme to make it more entertaining for residents. The program consisted of deadly scenarios (i.e. the zombie apocalypse and a plane crash) to teach residents how to effectively work together. This program, and several of the other educational programs I facilitated, let residents learn in a fun and educational setting. Through these programs I developed strong and amicable relationships with residents, which helped me to better assist them when they were…

One of the first interact club events I took charge of organizing involved reading to kids at an underprivileged elementary school. I served as the role model for a large group of curious young students and gained a more insightful perspective of the substantial impact that my volunteer work actually has on the community. Reading to kids is one example of an Interact event that influenced me into becoming a more effective communicator with different types of learners.…

Overall, this experience was very rewarding because we created nothing into something and as a result our project helped families who generally have lower incomes have the necessary school supplies for their children to be successful in school without forcing them to give up something else up. This project has opened my eyes to things happening around me and allowed me to become a more active and engaged community member while I was able to delve deeper into something that I'm interested and passionate…

I haven’t been involved with ME to WE but I have been included in other community/school events. I went to the ‘YRDSB OUR VOICE: THE WAY FORWARD’ conference. This conference was very beneficial because it was a student-lead conference. It allowed us, students to use our voice and speak up. At the conference, I realized how important it is to use your voice in a positive way to help people. You don’t only need to use your voice; you can get your message out in any way, media, arts or verbally. I learned that student voice is important because, we are the ones who are the future to making our world a better place. When I went back to school, after the conference, I had a tiny activity planned with my class about bullying and speaking up. With my teacher’s permission, I explained the activity to my class and they did the activity. Even though there were 2 months left of school, I could see that my classmates were starting to speak up. Even though I only had an impact on my class, it’s better than nothing.…

As an executive officer in Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, each individual is responsible for a legacy project during the school year. I was responsible for SOS Children’s Village which is a foster care neighborhood that houses children that were abused, neglected and/or abandoned. Even though this was a one-day experience, I was thrilled about the opportunity to work with children as I believe that no child should be denied proper medical care and a healthy home. It is said that time goes by when you are having fun. This was true for our experience as we went four hours over time. I coordinated leadership and team building activities for the children in which both the volunteers and participants enjoyed. Who knew that in five hours’ strong bonds can be developed with a stranger that you might not encounter again.…

I have partaken in TI@ti, sophomore year and currently, which is an organization based on increasing leaderships skills and increasing awareness against drugs and alcohol. Last year, I guided peers to make healthier life choices and to take positive risks. I stepped up when my advisors, Ms. Ramirez and Mr. Rosenfeld (at the time) needed presenters for the PTSO meetings, Saturday Academy for 7th and 8th graders, and for 600+ seniors who attended prom last school year. The Saturday Academy was a huge leadership role where I had to advise seventh and eighth graders on what to expect from high school. I volunteer at various locations such as for the 9/11 Day of Service, Jersey Cares Day, and Paterson’s Operation clean up. In all of these services, I did landscaping because I felt as if the…

My sophomore year I was part of a group call the kindness committee. Our group’s goal was to spread kindness around our school campus. We did this by making posters and starting a game that challenged our classmates to do certain tasks like “Give 5 complements today,” “Sit with someone new at lunch,” and “Say hi to someone new.” We started this committee in our leadership class, obtained our goal, and continued spreading kindness the rest of the year.…

With this group, I had the opportunity to go to the local Willa Gill Center and package CARE packages for the community. The CARE packages contained basic needs such as toothpaste and shampoo, and special items like nail polish and makeup. After we packaged everything, we were able to sort out clothing and cans that were going to be distributed the next day. Working behind the scenes and helping the workers prepare was very rewarding.…

Spelman College’s motto, A Choice to Change the World, mirrors my goal as a member of this intellectual community. During my first year at this institution, I dedicated myself to several hours of community service. I found that this was a vital part of my intellectual growth as both a student and person within society. This year I volunteered for several nonprofit organizations, however I dedicated most of my time to the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Before volunteering for this organization I was not quite sure how I would be able to make a significant difference in my community. However, when I volunteered for this organization, I was able to tremendously help people in Atlanta. Likewise, this experience opened my eyes to the increasing…

Each year, UM Dearborn hosts a community service project on Martin Luther King day. This year, the organization that we helped was called …………… It is an organization dedicated to helping children who have been abused. After an abused child has been taken into governmental protection, they are first taken to the hospital where they are assessed for mental, physical and sexual abuse. They are told to remove their clothes and are wrapped in a white sheet to wait for their doctors. It can be a cruel and humiliating process. ……………………. Creates blankets that are delivered to the hospitals where these children are assessed. Instead of being wrapped in the white sheet, they are able to look through the drawer of blankets and choose whichever one they would like. This helps them to feel more comfortable during the examination. Additionally, when the child is removed from their home, most of the time they are unable to bring anything with them. The blanket that they choose becomes theirs and having something of your own is also very…

I am the president of the Haitian American Club at Edward R.Murrow High School. As you can see, I made this event called “The Survival Kit for Haiti Drive”-due to the effect of Hurricane Matthew. I had to spend one week working continuously on a pamphlet to post of the walls of my High School. Not only that, but I had to set up the event with my metaphorical boss Mr.Fleurimont at room 392.Although,most of the students in the Haitian American Club had to help me with this event. I had to work hard; to do all the documents to get this event known throughout my High School: by myself. I used the paint software in my computer…
