Analysis of ASPCA's Advertisement

ASPCA is an organization that works to rescue animals from abuse, pass humane laws, and share resources with shelters across the country. They are known for their depressing commercial that strongly affects most people. The most propagandistic part of the commercial I think would be the song, Angel by Sarah McLachlan. ASPCA used this song because it seems like it is directed towards you. Additionally the song plays with your emotions causing you to feel sad for these abused animals. Making you want to donate or rescue an animal. In the song she sings “In the arms of the angel, fly away from here.” The lyrics make you think you could be an angel to save the animal from any harmful situations it was once fighting. It also making you think you could comfort a hurt or an abused animal yourself and make that animal happy and healthy again. ASPCA uses heartbreaking images of animals throughout the commercial that need help or rescued. The use of these images gets people thinking that they should help the harmed animals. In any of the ways they offer, by donating money to the organization and even just adopting an animal. This is propaganda because the images draw people in to actually do these things to help out the animals because you are actually seeing the personal problems the animals have. Seeing a talk that can barely walk or a kitten with only one eyeball, would usually have a huge effect on someone to the point where they would absolutely want to help them. If you do donate to the organization, ASPCA will also send you images of the now healthy happy dog you have donated to. Throughout the commercial ASPCA is constantly reminding you the consequences that would happen if these animals were not given help, or rescued. There are multiple scenes in the commercial where the screen goes black and a sentence appears on the screen.     The first reason someone should be willing to donate to the ASPCA because they help to fight against animal cruelty. Dog fighting has been a huge part of animal cruelty for some time now. The dog fighting consists of two dogs fighting, pretty much to the death. According to The Humane Society of the United States “the fights average one to two hours, ending when one of the dogs will not or cannot continue” (Dogfighting). The injuries that the dogs sustain from these fights are usually extremely severe. When purchasing a pet, you are taking on the responsibility of nurturing and caring for someone other than yourself. I chose a commercial by the ASPCA that raises awareness about animal abuse.
