Analyzing Old Spice
Analyzing Old Spice Advertisements these days use many different techniques in order to sell a product. The Old Spice Company uses several methods to convey a message and sell their product. Old Spice commercials are well known for using the famous Isaiah Mustafa, wrapped in just a towel, to talk about the company’s product. While Mustafa walks and talks, the background and setting of the commercial changes and the actor never loses eye contact. The product is always shown throughout the entire commercial. By combining all the elements of gender stereotyping, sexual imagery, and racial innuendoes, Old Spice is able to convey a message to sell their hygienic products. When it comes to attracting the right audience, Old Spice knows what to do. Not only does the commercial attract men, but also women. By using a buff, half-naked black man with a sexy voice, women automatically pick up their eyes and ears to pay attention. Captivating women along with men in a single commercial helps raise the chances of merchandise being purchased. Women always want their men to smell good, so if they like the product also, they are more likely to buy it for their man. Men are also attracted to this ad with the humor that is used. Isaiah Mustafa keeps a straight face the entire time the scene in the background changes. The randomness and one-line jokes in between help lighten the mood and keep you entertained.
This commercial is stereotypical of the male gender because the advertisement makes it seem like if you use Old Spice, then you will look like Isaiah Mustafa. In a sense, the ad makes it appear that to be a man, you have to use their product. All men should be buff and have a sexy voice. The impression given off suggests that if you use the same product, you too can be buff and get everything you desire. From this commercial, you can deduce that the ideal man should be in shape, have perfect teeth and skin, and have a deep, sexy voice. Ultimately this stereotype can become

    In the magazine Game Informer an advertisement for Old Spice caught my eye. The reason for this was because it was large scale, in your face, and took up two pages. The way that this ad established and reinforced the brand name was very clever. The ad used very neutral, warm welcoming colors such as dark orange, and blue with bold white text. Next he tells us viewers to look down, and the background suddenly drops to him being on a boat with new clothes. While he is on this boat, he lifts up an oyster that has two tickets in it, but they suddenly turn into a handful of diamonds. The background proceeds to drop once again and Isaiah Mustafa is suddenly on a beautiful white horse.     One of the rhetorical appeals used quite frequently is Pathos. Pathos is the way the author or in this case Old Spice tries to play with our emotions. The most obvious emotion in this commercial is humor. For example, the way the crazy-stalker mom is following her son around everywhere by riding in a laundry basket attached to her son’s car, highly unlikely but very entertaining and quite funny. People love anything that makes them laugh and Old Spice definitely played that up when those depressed mothers were wailing about their sons leaving them behind and growing up by going out with girls and leaving their chores behind.     On Youtube, when looking at videos you have to watch ads before you can enjoy the video you want to watch. I saw the commercial for Old Spice deodorant when browsing Youtube’s videos and thought it was a very effective advertisement, it is very fast paced and always changing so it makes the viewer concentrate and pay more attention to the commercial. The advertisement is based around the spokesperson, who is a man telling the audience that all women would prefer him over their man. He says the next best thing to having him as your man is having your man smell like him.     Old Spice is the creator of the ad. I do not perceive him/her as credible for the advertisement. It would be hard to believe that if I smelled like Isaiah Mustafa, AKA “the Old Spice Man”, I would be instantly able to do the things that he does in the commercial such as: for example, log rolling, walking on water, or jumping a waterfall into a hot tub, and coming out riding a motorcycle (just to name a few). The ad does not offer reasonable grounds for anything that is mentioned such as if your man smelled like him he could bake a gourmet cake in such a “dream home” he built with his own bare hands.
