Case Background:
Andrea Jung went from being a lackluster student to attending the Ivy League’s Princeton University to going on to becoming the CEO of Avon products. Jung was born in 1959 in Toronto, Ontario Canada. She earned a bachelors degree in English literature in 1979. Recently graduated, she got a job in Bloomingdale’s as a manager in training and did so well that she moved to a job at the I. Magnin stores. From there, she went on to become the executive vice president in charge of women’s apparel, cosmetics, and accessories at Neiman Marcus.
Jung wanted a new challenge so began working for Avon Products, Inc in 1993 as a consultant. The company was ailing at the time and needed a fresh burst of life to keep it going. The leadership team at Avon liked what Jung had to offer and hired her as the President of the marketing operations in 1994. She worked on bringing modern lines into the company. For instance, she introduced the Avon apparel line, new fragrances and new slogans. Because of her hard work and continued success in reinventing the company, she became the CEO of Avon Products. She was the first female CEO in Avon’s history. Since her rise as CEO, Jung has taken Avon to higher levels. Jung was able to expand the concept worldwide; Avon was sold in over 143 countries by the early twenty-first century. In her first five years of CEO, Jung gave Avon what it needed most. Revenue rose from 2000 to 2004 significantly and profits tripled. Jung was able to make it happen and proved that women can do anything.
