Animal research has been used throughout recorded history to test and try our medical, cosmetic and household products which are used on a daily basis. Almost all countries are actively researching on animals, even though it’s very expensive.
According to some estimates, there could be up to 115 million animals used in research each year. When …show more content…
By just listing the names of the tests I’ll be able to give you a better idea of what these poor animals go through; Whole Body and Short-term Toxicity, Skin and Eye irritancy, Skin Sensitization, Photo toxicity and the lethal dose test are all commonly performed on animals.
During another common test, the Draize eye and Draize skin test, rabbits are immobilized in full-body restraints while a substance is dripped or smeared into their eyes or onto their shaved skin. The rabbits often scream in pain and many break their necks trying to get free.
These Draize tests have been proven in studies to grossly over predict the effects that could be seen in any human eye. As you can see from the picture, these tests are extremely cruel and painful for the subjects involved.
There are some alternatives to animal testing, which include growing human cells and tissues and testing various products on those. Another is having actual people volunteer to be test subjects for medical research.
These are cheaper, easier and more reliable ways to complete examinations on how humans will react; yet still, animal testing
