“Man’s best friend”. The K-9s. Dogs. Many would side with the statement that dogs make the best pets. Others would argue to say that cats are better. I would disagree with that last statement, for dogs are better in many areas. Dogs are better at helping humans, keeping their owner happier, and they also keep their owner healthy.

They have unconditional love for their owners that just doesn’t compare to any other love. Dogs just help us feel good with the things they do from a grand trick, to the simplest of smiles they show us. Their loyalty reminds us that there is still some good in this world. In Japan there is a statue of a dog named Hachiko in memory of his loyalty to his owner. He is widely recognized for his story ; Hachiko, the dog, and his owner would walk together every morning to a train station, for that was the owner's transportation to work. Then when it was time for the owner to come back from work, the dog would go to the train station to wait for his owner. But one day his owner didn't return for he had died while at work from health complications. Hachiko didn't know of this so he went to go pick his owner up, as he usually did. When he saw that the owner didn't come he just came back the next day to await his arrival. And then again when he saw that his owner didn't arrive, he returned the next day expecting him to come. Hachiko kept coming back every day for ten years! He eventually died of old age. Though his owner showed no signs of returning he didn't care and kept coming to the train station. Many admire his loyalty. He's not the only loyal dog out there though. Many dogs even after not seeing their owners for a long time are always overjoyed to see the ones they love. Pets in general can lower stress and depression in a person. An owner’s blood pressure can lower from just stroking their dog. When owners play with their dogs, their dopamine levels go up. Owners are also almost obligated to play with their dogs or to take them out for a walk. This helps owners stay healthy by allowing them to exercise. Dogs help motivate owners to get out and move. Also, dogs can help strengthen the immune system. In addition, children that grow up with dogs are less likely to develop eczema. Meanwhile, kids that grow up with cats are more likely to get eczema. Even though a cat may show less affection than a dog, a cat loves you as much as a dog does. Cats are just as cute and adorable as a dog or just any other animal. A dog will provide unwavering love and loyalty, not to mention protection, but there are down sides to having a dog as well. Dogs will not question your authority, and can, in time, be trained to do exactly as they are told. They are more playful and active than cats. There are many species of dogs, and they come in varying sizes. Smaller dogs such as poodles and terriers are for people who just need an extra friend. Larger dogs like german sheperds or laboradors can provide protection as well as companionship. Dogs require a lot of attention, and they will make sure their owners are aware of it. They easily get bored and lonely and will eat furniture and destroy their home. Dogs bark, which may disturb neighbors or keep you awake at night. They are harder to housebreak, and can easily ruin floors during the training process. Dogs also require more veterinary…

I am the proud owner of a little brown dog named Bruno. I rescued him from the pound while I was in high school. The pound was unsure exactly what kind of dog Bruno was, but stated he is part Dachshund. I mentioned earlier, I rescued Bruno, but in reality he rescued me. My senior year of high school was not the greatest time for me, but owning Bruno got me through it. At the time, I just broke up with my high school “sweetheart” so to my immature young mind, I thought the world was coming to an end and I would never find someone else. Whether it was taking Bruno for walks, or trying to teach him new tricks he kept my mind occupied. I was given the responsibility to take care of him. I made sure he had all of his shots and there was fresh food and water for him. Until he was house broken, I was responsible to clean up after him. By being responsible for another being, it keeps a person centered not always thinking about themselves and their needs.…
