Argumentative essay
Should exotic animals be kept as pets?
___
By Emma Clark Have you ever wanted a baby lion or a chimpanzee as a pet? However, you can’t because your parents said no due to the fact it is illegal where you live or is too dangerous? Well, they are right! They may be cute when they are little, but when they get big, they can be very dangerous because they still have their killer instinct even if they are born and raised in a zoo or a house. 45/50 states have some kind of law on exotic pet ownership. “I am in favor of animal rights as well as human rights. That is the way of a whole human being.”- Abraham Lincoln Do you own birds, reptiles, or big cats? If you do then you already support …show more content…
exotic pet ownership. A lot of people believe that exotic animals have not adapted to be pets. Well, in fact no animal has and considering their extreme popularity, it can be argued that domesticated animals may be worse off. Domesticated animals are over bred and many are an non-native species. Domesticated animals need a suitable environment, contact with their own species, and an outlet for their energy, but unfortunately they also rarely get one. It also can be better for people to have exotic pet if they have allergies or if they do have the room for a dog.
Most exotic pets like birds and reptiles do not take up a large amount of space and do not need to be taken on walks. Unlike dogs who only live up to 15 to 20 year, some exotic pets can live up to 20 to 100 year if you're looking for a long time …show more content…
commitment.
Another thing is diversity, not everyone wants the same pet. People want to be different. Some people may not be allowed to have a cat or dog, but need a connection to the natural world through other animal life.
Some exotics serve other purposes, Llamas can serve as guard animals, lizards can provide pest control in greenhouses, or quail can produce eggs that are edible to humans.
One more thing that people think is that they will escape, well escapes happen rarely only about five times a year. Most of the time the escapes happen because they are bored and have nothing to do. That is why you give them toys and company. Obviously, when you owned an exotic pet responsibly by taking the time to provide for their special dietary, environmental, and social needs, exotic pets of all kinds of loving, interactive, fascinating companions! If they own responsibly, why can’t they have a exotic pet?
The 1st reason you should not own any exotic animals is because they are dangerous. I and many other people believe it is dangerous because their has been over 21 deaths and 164 injuries in the last decade that is just big cats. Total there's more than 75 deaths and over 543 injuries. It is also dangerous for the animals too. There has also been very many animal injuries and death. With bears it is 2 injuries and 6 deaths, big cats have 8 injuries and 55 deaths, elephants have 7 injuries and 11 deaths. Marine only have 3 deaths, primates have 7 injuries and 30 deaths, reptiles have 18 injuries and 43 deaths, the group of other odd animals like deer has 13 injuries and 52 deaths. Total there is 55 injuries and 200 deaths.
This website called, the spruce, said that in 2010 in Zanesville, Ohio, Four officers arrive at a private and discover owner Terry dead because he shot himself, the doors of multiple exotic animal cages are all open. 50 officers take to the streets and Staffers from the Columbus Zoo head to the Terry’s property, all hoping to catch the 50-plus animals. In total, 48 animals, 39 of them big cats, are deemed a serious threat to public safety and was shot to kill. 49 animals were slaughtered, including 18 Bengal tigers, 17 lions, six black bears, a pair of grizzlies, three mountain lions, two wolves and a baboon. “Killing me for fun will not make you more of a man, but it will make you less of a human being.” -Graham McGeorge The next reason is money. Money is a problem because exotic animals If your pet is injured or sick, it will have very expensive medical bills. Their dietary needs of some exotics may be more tricky to accommodate, and it will be more costly than a normal dog. Some only eat live food so a trusted supplier must be located and that will be expensive. Many exotic pets, particularly reptiles, have very specific needs in terms of lighting, temperature and housing which costs a lot of money. Some Exotic pets require large amounts of space, and special fencing that also would cost a lot of money. Most exotic animals live for 20-100 years so you need to know that you will have a reliable source of money.
Another problem with money is people buy them on the black market because it might be illegal where those people live, so they have to pay more. Baby Tigers on the black market-$3,200, Buying them legally is $2500. It is much cheaper but if they really want it they buy them against the law.
Also, if it is legal they might need permits like in Ohio the permit is for a dangerous wild animal that does not intend to breed their pet or get a new one. Depending on what kind of animals you are applying to own, the application fee will vary between $250 and $1,000 plus $125 for every animal over 15 animals. You must also show proof of liability insurance or a security bond of $200,000 to $1,000,000 depending on the pet you have or want. If you want to breed the animal it is $1000-$3000 for the permit. For snakes it is 150 (no breeding), or 300 (for breeding) but you still need to show that you have a liability insurance of $100000-$500000. ” Too many people spend money they don’t have. To buy things they don’t want, to impress people they don’t like.”- Will Rogers Another reason is because it could be illegal. 45/50 states have some kind of law on exotic pets. It could be you need a permit or they are just band from having them. Some states are specific as to what animals they restrict while others allow pretty much anything to be kept as a pet. Iowa Exotic Pet Laws are pretty straight forward. No dangerous wild animal is to be possessed, owned or bred in Iowa. This is defined as non-domestic cats and dogs, bears, primates, numerous reptiles and more.
After the Ohio exotic pet escape happen the world was surprised when they found out Ohio has not exotic pet laws. After that people pushed the state to change laws to keep us and the animals safer.
This website said that the following are restricted species, Hyenas, Gray wolves, Lions, Tigers, Jaguars, Leopards, including clouded leopards, Sunda clouded leopards, and snow leopards, Cheetahs, Lynxes including Canadian lynxes, etc. Ohio also now have permits for owning exotic animals. Which cost a lot of money. “The time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look upon murder of men.”- Leonardo da Vinci I have 3 more reason that are going to be in this paragraph together because they are all similar. One of the 3 is not having enough time for your animal. When I say time I mean how long they live. If you are old and get a exotic animal it will probably outlive you because they live 20-100 years. If they do outlive you, your relatives don’t know what to do with it. Which come to our 2nd problem releasing them.
If they do outlive you and most will, their relatives will set them free back into the wild. The people who take this way may have good intentions, but releasing exotic animals into the wild is mean, not to mention illegal. Having been raised by humans, these animals have little to no survival skills. They often wind up dying from exhaustion and starvation while others get hit by vehicles or killed by predators. They either get released or escape. Escape happen rarely, but when they do it normally results in animal or human injuries, even death. “We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals”-Immanuel Kant Exotic animals should not be kept as pets because they are dangerous, cost a lot of money, are illegal, there is not enough time, people releasing them back in the wild, and animals escaping. There are many reasons to have and not have exotic animals as pet, it just depends on the one you care about more. Your life or being different.
