government should put gun control regulations is because there is a lot of gun-related suicides going around as well. Suicide rates have increased, because there’s a lot of people that are mentally ill that own a firearm. People that are mentally ill don’t realize what their doing to themselves, they just think that, that’s their only and best option that they have, for example in the article Suicide, Guns, and Public Policy the authors E. Michael Lewiecki, MD, and Sara A. Miller, PhD., say that “Suicides is a serious public health concern that is responsible for almost 1 million deaths each year worldwide. It is commonly an impulse act by a vulnerable individual… In the United States, firearms, particularly handguns are the most common means of suicide”(27). Everyday a large amount of people commit suicide and it will continue happening until the government puts some kind of gun control regulation that prevents everyone, except people in the armed forces from owning a gun. Keeping firearms from everyone will never be possible. The problem in the United States that doesn’t allow to get rid of every firearm, excluding the ones in the armed forces is the Second Amendment. The Second Amendment protects the rights of people to keep arms, like Nadia E. Nedzel in Concealed Carry: The Only Way to Discourage Mass School Shootings “The Second Amendment provides that “the right of the people to keep bear Arms, shall not be infringed”(429). The phrase “Shall not be infringed” means that the right of people to own a gun can not be broken, even if the government wanted to get rid of the guns people own. Which means that anyone can get a firearm whether they purchase it for a sport, hunting, or even violence. Family is the most important reason why the government should get rid of guns.
Over the past couple of years the mass killing of children in school shootings has gone overboard. For example in the article Contagion in Mass Killings and School Shootings the authors Sherry Towers, Andres Gomes-Lievano, Maryam Khan, Anuj Mubayi, and Carlos Castillo-Chavez, say that “On average, mass killings involving firearms occur approximately every two weeks in the US, while school shootings occur on average monthly. We find that state prevalence of firearm ownership is significantly associated with the state incidence of mass killings with firearms, school shootings, and mass shootings”(1). This means that approximately every month there’s at least one school shooting going around the United
States. In addition to the school shootings, all the innocent children that get ahold of a firearm without knowing what it is or what it does. A child with a firearm can cause serious damage not only to himself but to the people around him/her. Like Thomas K. McInerny, President, American Academy of Pediatrics said in his article Keeping Children Safe From Gun Violence, “Pediatric gun deaths in the U.S dropped by more than 50 percent… Guns are all-too present in the lives of children. 5.7 million Americans own guns, yet 21 percent of the who have children store their guns loaded… 31 percent store them unlocked”(209). All of this happens because the parents don’t place it in a safe spot, where their children can’t reach it.
In conclusion the government should put gun control restriction that prevent everyone, except people in the armed forces to have firearms. If they are able to infringed the Second Amendment and get rid of the guns, it will help reduce the rate of gun crimes, suicides, and will help keep families safe. Even if people say that “guns” make them feel safe.
