While internship, even unpaid one, can provide individuals with educational and career benefits, there are moral and empirical reasons to question these benefits, and the conception of internships as reciprocal relationship. There is potential for substantial educational benefits from experiential learning, such as gain perspective on ones intended profession, gaining relevant experience and networking. Internships can be used to augment skills learned in classrooms, providing an opportunity for them to be applied. Unpaid internships raise a variety of ethical concerns, mainly focused on if the relationship is truly mutually beneficial. From avoiding minimum wage, which is supposed the minimum in order for subsistence living, to the unfair ways that lacking pay unfair burdens lower socioeconomic student, there are a number of concerns about unpaid internship. Since this article is based on the US, the section dealing with the legal implications for unpaid internship are not super helpful to me. However, the ethical and pedagogical implications of internships are very important to the initial question of is there some benefit that justifies the existence of unpaid internship at all. To fill in the gap left by the exclusion of the legal argument, I will include my own analysis of the relevant Ontario
