Guns on a school campus is an issue with two clear sides, those who support allowing concealed weapons and those who rally for gun free zones. David Burnett supports the idea of allowing students to carry concealed weapons. Burnett’s central argument is that gun free zones leave students defenseless. Darby Dickerson disagrees, saying students do not understand the responsibilities of owning a weapon and should therefore, not be allowed to carry them on campus.…
The purpose of this draft is to inform the readers of the correlation between guns and drugs. In this draft I hope to inform the general public, the students and Professor of ENGL 111, how drugs may be implicated in many of the mass shootings. As we are all aware guns do not shoot people, it takes a person to decide to use it. It is believed by many experts that medication alters the mind and the mind controls the trigger finger. Guns do not kill people, people kill people. The focus of this draft is to convey information or ideas as clearly and effectively as possible.…
Concealed carry anywhere has been a highly controversial topic for many years. In the back and forth of this heated debate, multiple subcategories have arisen. One of which is whether universities should allow student or staff to carry concealed handguns on campus. This is a strange debate topic because the obvious answer is no. Just a few of the reasons are an increase in crimes of passion, a possible increase in school shootings, and a high risk for robbery and assault.…
This world is a scary place. Having a concealed weapon offers you a protection you would otherwise have to wait according to Peoria pd on average 6.7 minutes. When there is an emergency we don’t always have the time we need in order to wait for professionals to arrive. Much like CPR, we train ordinary people to give CPR so we can keep someone alive while waiting for professionals. We need trained ordinary people to help and give us that little bit of extra time.…
Why is gun control the supposed “cure” for crime? Why is there always this need to blame guns for people’s crimes? If this theory is correct, then the belief that pencils cause grammatical errors is also true; wait, that doesn’t sound right, does it? Now, all of a sudden when the “cure” is used in this light it becomes ridiculous. In fact, Americans have a constitutional right to own handguns, and stricter laws and licensing will not effectively save lives.…
After various shootings in schools and colleges, gun control laws have been a debate all over the country and all over the news. However, many state legislatures have already decided to obligate colleges and universities to allow “concealed carry”. While on one side laws are being passed to keep guns away from the public, on the other side, guns are being permitted in college campuses. Allowing people to carry guns in college campuses is not the way to keep students, faculty, and staff safe, because the students will have to face additional risks, a healthy learning environment is at stake, and citizens allowed a conceal carry permit aren’t always righteous.…
This is an unreasonable request, there are not enough first responders to sit in each classroom across this nation. Schools are thought to be a safe harbor where people can attend in peace and focus on learning. This thought has been proven to be wrong over and over again. Stephens, (2016) states “There are bad apples in every crowd, but many crimes committed with guns are committed by people who have stolen or borrowed a weapon, not by those who have carry permits” (para 19). Crimes happen on campus on a daily basis such examples are robberies, fights, sexual assault and murder. All schools have a form of security: Police, security guards, even faculty members. Re-vamping schools to be better prepared for active shooter/mass shooting is financially unconceivable. Faculty members are not trained as first responders; their primary focus should be on the students in their care. Security guards are not equipped nor properly trained for handling these situations. By allowing conceal carry for qualified personnel would deter these crimes from occurring. Having a concealed carry permit creates a level of uncertainty of who may be armed, resulting the loss of the safe haven feeling for anyone who is contemplating a gun based crime on…
Gun control should not be in force because it only affects the people who follow the laws. If weapons were banned, that is, putting gun control into effect, the people who follow laws won’t be able to protect themselves from people who don’t abide by the laws. The main purposes of fire arms is self- protection and hunting. So if the government tries to take our weapons away from us we can just throw the 2nd amendment at them and tell them that this is unconstitutional. We understand they are trying to cut down on crime, but it is actually making the crime rates go up. In Britain the government thought it would bring the crime/murder rate down but, it actually increased about 1 million more deaths each year. The government is trying to get is ammo they are trying to limit ammo manufactures to a certain amount of ammo a day. They are also making people go into havoc and making them go crazy over ammo, so people are buying…
Ever since school shootings on campuses many people have been skeptical about guns in the wrong hands of people. David Burnett writer of "Students Should Have the Right to Carry Guns on College Campuses.", agrees with the fact that students should be allowed to have guns on campus, for the use of self defense, for decreasing the crimes committed, and because colleges aren’t as safe as you think. Although Darby Dickerson writer of "Students Should Not Be Allowed to Carry Guns on College Campuses.", is on the other side arguing that concealed carry laws increased violence on college campuses, guns on campus lead to bad accidents and homicide, and that even though college kids are mature enough to have guns their brains are still…
America is widely known for having a fascination with violence and is a “gun – happy” country. However, this love for firearms has led to tragedies untold and horrifying truths about the mental state of individuals as revealed in the Columbine School shooting incident. Major and minor causes collectively led up to this event and bring up the question of whether or not this tragedy could have been prevented. The NRA play a key part in the debate over gun control, and parents play a vital role in instilling future generations with respect for handguns and being involved in their lives. Though there is room to consider a grey area guns continue to be the instruments used to sow sorrow resulting…
Your home alone on a cool quiet night; you roll over and witness a large individual kick in your door with a twelve gauge shotgun. You hear him coming up the stairs, what do you do? Run? Call the police, or do you grab your gun and protect you and your children. Now if you were to take the gun out of the situation what would you have done? The intruder is already in your house where your kids sleep at night, and the police's response time is not going to be fast enough. What if you were able to hide, well you can not hide forever and eventually he will find you. No matter what you think, or how you feel about guns; if you were to put yourself in that position. You would be very grateful for the gun that saved you and your precious children.…
Approximately 30,000 people die a year because of guns when they are used in both self defense and murder. Many people argue whether restrictions on guns should be enacted or repealed. Tensions have grown high on both sides of the issue making it a hot topic in our country today. Many people cast their votes in the last election based on their feelings about this very issue. The divide among Americans when it comes to gun control is large, spanning from those who want strict regulation, including an outright ban on all firearms, to those who want complete legalization of individual gun ownership. Guns can be used for killing or protection, so it is important to examine all…
The stance on the prevention of firearms on college campuses is being questioned due to recent school shootings. Colleges in Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Mississippi, Oregon, Utah, Texas, and Wisconsin allow students to carry firearms on their campuses. Ninety-three percent of crimes that involve college students as victims happen off campus (armedcampuses.org)(citation). However, these off-campus incidences may occur while the students are walking back to wherever they live. If they aren't allowed to carry a handgun on campus, they are most likely to not have it on their person after a day of school. People would argue that self-defense training, Tasers, and pepper spray are as effective as a handgun against an armed assailant. I do not agree with this statement and I will explain why in the following paragraphs. I will also be going over whether or not college…
One of the biggest controversial topics in America today is Gun Control, whether we should or should not have gun control. The Government claims that if they take the guns away, that there will be a drop in deaths and crimes. The Second Amendment state that every citizen of the United States of America has a right to bare arms(ProCon#1). The Gun Control Law will take away that right completely, along with some of our freedom. If the Gun Control Law is enforced in the United States, our hunting right will be removed, our self-defense right will be taken away, and it will amplify the problem.…
