McKenzy Hupke, a senior at the Performing Arts Academy in Lakehurst, NJ recently was diagnosed with stage four squamous cell carcinoma, a cancer that invaded her head and lungs. One day during school Hupke fell onto the ground after a long nosebleed which quickly made her lose consciousness. After all of this, the cancer rendered her completely deaf. Tumors in both ears forced the removal of her eardrums.Thankfully she hears because the creation of cochlear implants. Hupke is a strong teenage leader who, “You would never know she’s suffering from the level of illness that she is,” said Mary Kenny, vocal music instructor at the Performing Arts Academy. “She never allows it to hold her back.”…
There have only really been two debates that have been significant in shaping the outcome of the race. The first was in the debate held in October, 1980 between President Jimmy Carter and his Republican challenger, Ronald Reagan. At the end of their 90-minute debate, each candidate was given 3 minutes to make a closing statement. Reagan had cleverly posed a series of questions to which he knew the majority of voters would answer in the negative. And with the election day less than a week away, he managed to shape the way voters would make up their minds in these vital last days of the campaign. Support for President Carter fell away badly following the debate and on election day he won only six states.…
With the elections less than a few months away, political debates always seem to get the best of politicians and their supporters. This year’s debate was nothing short of unexpected controversies. Shortly after the debate held on the night of September 9th, uproar arose all over America after the remarking comments that candidate Hilary Clinton made about Donald Trump and his supporters.…
Vice-Presidential candidates Mike Pence(R) and Tim Kaine(D) took to the stage Tuesday to debate which of their running mates could best lead the United States through a turbulent period in its history.…
At the first debate where estimated 100 million people watching, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton shook hands with smile on the stage, and Lester Holt of NBC nightly news explained the rule of the debate. It was a temperament test for Trump to prove that he is suitable for the President. However, he failed to do so in my opinion. This debate proves that he is not sincere, not patient enough to listen, not honest, not prepared enough, and absolutely not suitable for being the President.…
During the third Presidential Debate both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump both have strong arguments and strong beliefs, but the way Clinton uses rhetorical appeal to catch the attention of her audience is outstanding. She is a career politician and is able to convey her points and views much more effectively than Donald Trump. The three main points that I find to be very interesting are abortion, gun laws and the tax cuts. All three of these topics are very hot topics, now do I agree with everything she says no but she has all the right arguments to win a debate. She keeps her calm better than Trump, that’s not to say she doesn’t show signs of breaking from frustration but compared to him she is much more experienced. Donald Trump sometimes comes off as an…
I believe that the Presidential Election of 2000 was illegitimate. The reason is because there were 175,000 declared uncountable ballots that were either dimpled or hanging Chads (1). Additionally, if these votes were hand counted, I believe that Al Gore would have been ahead and would have won the state of Florida. Additionally, the state of Florida had a purge list of 20,000 US citizens that were unable to vote (1). For example, if a Florida citizen had the same name as a convicted felon, and/or initials, the list captured their name and automatically placed it on the purge list. Because of this list, many people were turned away at the polls on election day. In the state of Florida, there are 67 counties and 18 of those counties chose…
In the days since Mike Pence was announced as an honorary degree recipient and the principal speaker at Notre Dame’s Commencement this May, I have both overheard and been a part of many conversations debating the University’s decision to invite Vice President Pence to campus for such a significant event.…
Terrorism has taken part of all of our lives. At least once a week, some type of terrorism has happened or tried. President Obama discussed how he took cautious views on fighting terrorism and Isis. Mr. Obama is reluctant to having more Americans die fighting at war with terrorism. Although, it's also understandable to just want to end the war completely. This is the Republicans argument. Republicans would just like to send troops to fight the war in the Middle-East ending once and for all. In order to the long awaited war, it takes more resources, like machinery, weapons, money, and troops. Republicans also feel the situation we're in now, it's vital to demolish any chance of Iran having nuclear weapons for protection of America and the rest…
I chose to use the 2012 Presidential General Election, because I remember this election the most detailed. The candidates running for the democratic side were Barack Obama for president and Joe Biden for vice president. Running for the republican side were Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan. The presidential candidates for the libertarian party were Gary Johnson and his vice presidential candidate James Gary. The overall winner(s) of the 2012 Presidential election was/were President Barak Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.…
The 2012 Vice Presidential debate was found on www.washingtonpost.com. Throughout the debate, both sides, Ryan and Biden used an implied promise in order to get the public to…
The movie “The Great Debaters” has a huge impact on African American students. This movie was based on the 1930s when colleges were segregated. Forest Whitaker was a preacher in the Methodist church. In the beginning of the movie he gave a speech. He preaches, “I believe we are the most privileged people in America because we have the most important job in America, the education of our young people”. These young people he speaks of are the young African American students. Our leaders are the most privileged people in America. For example, our teachers, preachers, parents and etc. Forest Whitaker says” this is the most important job”, because one day their children will be the future leaders of America. Forest Whitaker believes they are the…
American rights and the Constitution are both reasons why the United States is a wonderful land of liberty. However, as time has advanced many laws have either been reconstructed or repealed. Recently, President Barack Obama proposed gun control legislation that inflamed the division among the American citizens into two groups, those who favor the restrictions on firearms, and those who opposed the regulations. So who are these gun grabbers and gun nuts and what factors differentiate the two groups? These people come from different townships, religions and lifestyles and most of them do not share the same values, morals, or political views with the opposing side. The division within the nation has stressed the deeply…
The rise and success of Donald Trump’s candidacy exhibits the fact that Americans are angry with the current state of the country. He appeals to many citizens because Donald is able to stand on a large public platform, shouting about immigration, refugees, borders and the economy. All of these issues are currently affecting his supporters, a majority of them white working class americans who don't see the current economy or government benefiting them.…
The decision of the year has been Trump or Clinton. There has been hate, questionable actions, and an array of surprises when we reflect on this years presidential election. There is no doubt that it is controversial, but in the end either Trump or Clinton will be moving into the Oval Office in the start of next year.…
