Argumentative Essay: Why Should Schools Start Later?
School Should Not Start Early
I don’t like to stay at school any longer than they have to. People in school don’t want to be there longer in the day either. That is why schools should not start earlier in the day. School should start at the same time as usual and end at the same time as usual. If we did start school later then students would have less time to get homework done, students who are involved in after school activities wouldn’t get home until a later time as well. Older kids with jobs would also have a hard time getting schoolwork done if school started later. Most of the time high school students with lots of homework and after school activities would have a hard time getting homework done and other school related work is done.

Schools should stay the same time as it is now instead of having it change to an hour later. We do not get enough time in the day to do things, even if it is an hour’s difference, it still makes a big difference in their performance and their behaviors. Kids in high school have a lot of work and it makes it hard to get it done when there is a lot of work to get done. Not only that, but it takes up their free time to go have fun and to do what they want without having to worry about school. Kids and especially teens should have time to themselves and to not have to worry about projects, homework, or other activities. School should stay the same instead of having it start and hour …show more content…
Also, with sports, it’s harder to get schoolwork done or other important out of school activities done. We do not want to be caught up in homework, and being tired from staying up late to get schoolwork done isn’t fun either. There are boys and girls everywhere that struggle keeping their grades up for sports, and if you were to change the time we go to school, that would make everything change. In conclusion, the school board should keep the time of school the same, so all students in school will not have a harder time dealing with extra-curricular activities and other tasks that make getting home done

In the article “Our kids need more sleep” Written by Valerie Erde, she makes many good points about why school should be set back to a later time. First is how it increases academic alertness and vigilance. Second, is how a later start time decreases depression in teens and decreases tardiness and decreases truancy. Last, is how this later start time is actually helping the students get better grades. I one hundred percent agree with this and believe these policies should definitely be implemented.…

Schools should start later in the day because high schoolers would get close to the recommended amount of sleep, which will prevent them from sleeping in class and it will decrease the risk of students getting into dangerous situations. Most high schoolers need a good night sleep to perform well in school. People from the ages of 12-25…

Ever imagined what it would be like to get out early and have a lot of time to do whatever you want before the sun goes down? Do you think that school should start later to give teenagers more sleep? School shouldn't start later because 8:45 is already late enough, a earlier start makes for an earlier finish, and if students want more sleep then they should go to bed earlier. If you're in the school district I go to the school starts at 8:45.…

Certainly it could be said that if school starts later, then it will end later; while this is a good point, it fails to account for the loss of sleep caused by early start times. The Scholastic Scope article explains “For one thing starting school late means dismissing school later, which leaves fewer daylight hours for after school activities like sports” (O’Neil 21). Although this is true, many students arrive at school later because they do not get enough sleep. While some might argue that starting school later means that districts will have to invest in busses and drivers, they forget that starting school later will help align school schedules with sleep schedules. For instance, the article explains “School bus schedules are arranged to meet the needs of not just one school but all schools in the district” (O’Neil 21). Even though there would need to be more buses to meet the needs for all schools, kids would be more alert in class. Some people may argue that starting school later brings the wrong message to kids. The Scholastic Scope article says “Being on time, managing a busy schedule, and getting enough sleep are important skills teens will need to know when they enter the workforce” (O’Neil 21). In contrast, starting school later would help kids stay physically and mentally healthy. Starting school later will help students academically succeed and stay mentally…

Therefor I don’t think our school board should add time to each school day. I think we should keep our schedule starting at 7:30 and ending at 2:30. That way we can get home do chores, play and go to any afterschool activities. If we changed our school hours that would interfere with parents/guardians work schedules. Now with the schedules our school has we don’t get to restless with the teachers or other…

By doing so, students would be more alert and wanting to learn, and they can become successful. An issue that comes along with changing the high school hours are the diverse amounts of after school activities. With ending school later, these activities would have to end later also. A teenager's natural sleep clock wants to go to bed later anyway, so it would not affect that teenager if he or she gets home late. For intense, a teenager who plays volleyball is used to getting out of practice at 5:30 p.m., instead she would get out at 7:30 p.m.. She would still have time to go home and do homework and other things and would not have to worry about going to bed or waking up early because of her natural sleep clock. With this not being an issue, high schools need to change their hours to being later. Many students would be positively changed mentally and physically if schools adapted to their natural sleep clocks. Students would be a lot more energized and ready to take on the day. In conclusion, there are a variety of benefits for teenagers that come with high school classes…

Schools should end later. From my personal experience, I usually end school and then have hours of extra curricular activities, because I am a dancer. This limits my time that I am able to spend on homework, and causes me to stress out. Also, it forces me to go to bed later and not get enough sleep for a growing teen. If school ended earlier I would be able to finish my homework earlier and get to go to bed earlier which would enable me to then get more sleep. Finally, I would get to spend more time with family. I am always rushing home from school, right to my homework and then off to dance, and then back home for homework. I never get to talk to my family and tell them about my day.…

One reason school start times should be later than they are now is because junior high and high school students are “programmed” to stay up late and sleep in. During teenage years, students bodies are designed to stay up later and sleep in. Both When Sleep Becomes A Nightmare, an article written by Scholastic, and the National Sleep Foundation website agree with just that! Nancy Shute, an award-winning science journalist, stated on npr.com “...it’s difficult, if not impossible, for them to fall asleep before 10:30.” If students fall asleep at 10:30 pm and get the recommended amount of rest, which is 9 ½ hours, students should not wake up until 7:00 am. Some schools have already started class at this…

School should start later because kids don’t get enough sleep. School starts way too early. Kids are even falling asleep in class. If kids don't get enough sleep, they will have a hard time waking up in the morning. Kids aren’t the only ones having problems, teachers have problems too. Kids can’t get enough sleep because school starts early and kids have to wake up at least an hour before school even…

It would be bad idea to add an extra one an half hour because there would be no time for extracurricular activities, older siblings wouldn’t be able to get their younger brother/ or sister off the elementary school bus, and schools would have to provide a snack for the children because it would interfere with families early dinner time. Can the school afford this? It is very important for families to have family time because families should have a strong bond. Also, kids should have time to get out their energy and have fun instead of learning for nine hours a day. Here are my reasons on why the School Board should not change school hours.…

For this debate I am debating why school time should stay the same. J.C.M.S middle school in Sierra Vista has a delayed start time of 9:00 a.m., and finish school at 4:00 p.m. This affects the children who are involved if afternoon sports, most time not getting out until 6:00 p.m sometimes later. If you have homework that same night after spending two hours doing a sport you might procrastinate and not do your homework at all or you will be tired and end up making mistakes that should not have been made. An earlier start time ensures an earlier release time letting sports start earlier and homework being done at an earlier time while not as exhausted from the day.…

Researchers have found that 59% of middle schoolers and 87% of high schoolers are getting less than the recomended 8 to 9 hours of sleep a night (National Sleep Foundation). “Conflicts between parents and school districts”(Pediatricians Say School Should Start Later for Teens Health) the conflict with starting school later has had a lot of controversy. Parents think that it is horrifically challenging to move schedules up and back with the school districts. Why? Parents have busy schedules with work and have to change their work setting or call into their job and say that they are late. It is a very confusing aspect because students want to start later for the better benefit of them. On the other hand parents have to get to work early and make sure that there kids are at school at the same time. Parents seem to struggle abundantly when it comes to school starting later. Sometimes they have to call someone to take their kids because they have a different working schedule than their kids going to school. It is a very beneficial change that people in schools need to look into because students seem to like the idea of it. It benefits them on their sleep and the way the day…

One of the reasons we think the school start time should stay the same is because it will make the time commitment of participating in after school activities more difficult to manage. All of us, like many other students, participate in after school activities. A later school start time will mean that school activities will start later and run even later than they do now. The later in the day it gets, the less energy we have to give 100% effort mentally. We will also be more physically tired which means if…
