Arguments Against Gun Ownership
Gun ownership has the capability to positively assist a home occupant during a burglary. A burglar can be convinced to leave the home in the presence of a gun-wielding occupant, or a gun-owner can exercise his right to self-defence and harm the intruder, effectively ending the home invasion. With this in mind, it can appear to be a good idea to own a gun in the event of home invasion. But does this really mean that owning a gun will protect from home invasion? Or that having a gun at the time of the invasion will guarantee a positive outcome? And, in the event there is no home invasion, but a presence of a gun in the home, is the home owner really protected? The research in this area is limited and gun control studies are lacking in this area that focuses immediately on gun ownership and its relationship to positive outcomes in home invasions.

For example, in terms of using owning guns in the home, studies have shown that persons who keep a firearm in the home are at a greater risk for a non-intentional shooting accident, may injure or kill their family during self-defence, or may be at a greater risk of committing suicide with the presence of an in-home gun (Kellermann et al., 1998). One study concluded that state-supported gun restrictions in the home were associated with a decrease in firearm related suicide and home homicides (Fleegler et al., 2013) while another study showed that 2/3 of homicides that were committed by spouses and ex-spouses were done with the use of firearms (Fox and Zawitz, 2007). Yet another study concluded that “Guns kept in homes are more likely to be involved in a fatal or nonfatal accidental shooting, criminal assault, or suicide attempt than to be used to injure or kill in self-defense (Kellermann et al.,

Wilson presents convincing statistics to support his statements. He shows that only a fraction of the guns used by criminals are purchased at a gun shop. He points out that many would-be burglars are scared away because a home owner displayed or used a gun. He also presented statistics that disprove the assertion of gun control advocates that “the cost of self-defense is self injury: Handgun owners are more likely to shoot themselves or their loved ones than a criminal” (Barnet and Bedau 125). These statements are very true and should definitely be taken into consideration when dealing with gun…

All in all, it is not a good choice for American society at the present stage to ban gun. From the constitutional view, Gun Ban is contrary to the constitution of human rights and protection spirit; from the political view, it will increase the risk of tyranny; from the economic view, it will lead criminal squares to become one of the guns of the monopolist; from the social reality view, it leads to the lack of citizen means of self-defense; finally, from social culture view, it does not conform to the American culture tradition and social psychology. I think the key to the problem of gun crime is not the gun itself, but the deep problems of the society, such as poverty, social life and so on. I think gun control is just a…

It is quite clear that by looking at criminals intentions and the overall protection of our country's people gun control should not be administered. Since the establishment of our great nation guns have played a central role and have been of great importance. Though some may think that guns are weapons of war, crime, and violence our Founding Fathers realized they were an essential right that needed to be preserved for the citizens. In the Bill of Rights the Second Amendment of the Constitution reads "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed." Gun control proponents have…

In a research by Harvard Injury Control Research Center, researchers found out that riding with a firearm in the vehicle was a marker for aggressive and dangerous driver behavior. Drivers with guns in their car are 44 percent more likely than unarmed drivers to make obscene gestures at other motorists, and 77 percent more likely to follow them too closely. In another research in Texas, researchers found out that people with concealed handgun licenses were more likely to involve in gun offenses or offenses involving a death. After some serious mass shooting happened in the United States, pro-gun ideologues are calling for ordinary citizens to arm themselves as a solution to mass shootings. They are suggesting that a civilian at the scene of mass shooting who has a gun can stop the massacre. However, in the last 30 years, 62 mass shooting incidents happened in the United States, and none of them were stopped this way. Another research shows that for every time a gun is used in self-defense in the home, there are 7 assaults or murders, 11 suicide attempts, and 4 accidents involving guns in or around a home. Gun kept in homes are more likely to be involved in fatal accident shooting, criminal assault or suicide attempts than to be used to defend…

A controversial argument opposite to both viewpoints of gun control mentioned, is the negatives of guns and the need for gun control. In the article, “The Impact of Violence on Children,” Joy Osofsky elaborates that gun violence in communities are extremely detrimental in communities especially on children. Osofsky, a professor of public health in Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, uses masses of children psychology, scenarios and experiences to demonstrate the importance of gun control and to increase gun regulations. She focuses on children’s response to guns and violence, showing that the exposure of gun violence to children at their early ages not only increases their interest to use guns, but also the likelihood to use…

Gun control should not be in force because it only affects the people who follow the laws. If weapons were banned, that is, putting gun control into effect, the people who follow laws won’t be able to protect themselves from people who don’t abide by the laws. The main purposes of fire arms is self- protection and hunting. So if the government tries to take our weapons away from us we can just throw the 2nd amendment at them and tell them that this is unconstitutional. We understand they are trying to cut down on crime, but it is actually making the crime rates go up. In Britain the government thought it would bring the crime/murder rate down but, it actually increased about 1 million more deaths each year. The government is trying to get is ammo they are trying to limit ammo manufactures to a certain amount of ammo a day. They are also making people go into havoc and making them go crazy over ammo, so people are buying…

With the growing number of mass shootings in America and violence around the world, the issue of gun control reform has been widely debated across all political parties. The arguments against reform almost always boil down to citing the constitution's second amendment; the right for citizens to keep and bear arms, whereas proponents of reform suggest the installment of new laws ranging anywhere to a simple mental screening before a person is given a license to complete withdrawal and ban on any form of assault weapons and guns, citing that it is far too easy for an individual to purchase a weapon and ammunition and then proceed to shoot middle school students and their teachers. In any case the topic is more complicated than either side will…

Since 1982, there have been at least 85 public mass shootings across the country, with the killings unfolding in 34 states from Massachusetts to Hawaii. Due to these mass shootings, the left side/liberals believe that the United States’ government needs to act and create and enforce gun control laws. Some people view all guns, no matter the purpose, as malicious and there is too easy of access to own a gun. The second amendment is in existence because our Founding Father’s saw how important it is for a free country to be able to stand up for themselves against tyranny. Those who are pro-gun control do not understand the valuable means behind the foundation of the United States of America. For 200 years, the second amendment has helped…

Call the police, or do you grab your gun and protect you and your children. Now if you were to take the gun out of the situation what would you have done? The intruder is already in your house where your kids sleep at night, and the police's response time is not going to be fast enough. What if you were able to hide, well you can not hide forever and eventually he will find you. No matter what you think, or how you feel about guns; if you were to put yourself in that position. You would be very grateful for the gun that saved you and your precious children.…

What would you say if you knew that there are more crimes with gun control than there is without it? Gun control is a terrible idea for society in so many ways that it’s not even funny. Because there will be those people out there that will figure out how to beat the system and keep guns in their possession, to harm a lot of people maybe even have a mass shooting. Well guess what and nobody else will have guns to protect their self’s or shoot that guy who’s start a mass shooting on a punch unarmed citizens. There is a bunch of data that proves that gun control increases the crime rates. Also conceal and carry helps with self-defense. And taking away guns is a horrible choice and it would be just plain stupid. Here’s something Linda Schmittroth said about gun control that I agree with a hundred percent, “In contrast proponents of the individual rights argument…

I picked the topic Gun Laws because I thought it would be an interesting thing to learn and research about. Throughout my research about Gun Laws I found a few good resources but the others weren't that great. The best resource I found was an article about how if a person in Virginia admits themselves to a mental health institution, there right to own a weapon is taken away immediately. Then they go on to add that after the person recovers, the patient is trying to get the weapon back but they might not be able to gain that right again. One interesting thing that was said was "This article argues that it would be in the best interest of the patient and the community to amend Virginia's voluntary admission form so that individuals who seek voluntary mental health treatment are not automatically relieved of their firearm…

Picture sitting in school while people next to you possess guns. Though this may sound a bit farfetched, it can happen. Due to the second amendment of the Constitution, one has the right to bear arms. It is reasonable that people would want access to guns for the sport of hunting though. But allowing people to "carry" guns is reckless. Firearms should be outlawed because they have granted children access to kill easily, inflated the murder rate in the United States, were created to kill, and have inflated the murder rate in the United States.…
