When there is not an effective communicating effectively, patient safety is at risk for several reasons such as misinterpretation of information, unclear orders over the telephone, and overlooked changes in status. Lack of communication creates situations where medical errors can occur. I have not seen such situation in my clinical practices; however now that I am precepting I see a lot of times where my preceptor or other nurses that are in the unit contact the physicians to clarify the orders. I totally believe in the fact that if there is a good communication between the health care providers these can positively affect patient’s health. For instance, one day while I was precepting we had a code in the unit where nurses and physicians did an excellent job, they maintained their confidence and worked as a team to save the patient’s life. Effective teams are characterized by trust, respect, and collaboration that can lead to positive outcomes. This essential it will definitely help me in the future career.
