Learning Outcomes
• identify and use Simple Present forms of Be/Have and Adverbs of frequency
• Use and apply knowledge of new vocabulary to new contexts
• Demonstrate understanding of topic sentences and controlling ideas by writing a short paragraph about growing up with a solid topic sentence and controlling idea
• Compare and contrast their experiences growing up with the experiences of American children
Rationale
Students will use their own background knowledge to understand and discuss growing up in America and learn new vocabulary associated with growing up. Therefore, a cross-linguistic influence (Brown 2015) will surface in their
learning. Students will orally discuss decision-making and growing up by using the new vocabulary they have learned. They will be asked to learn about topic sentences in paragraphs in order to improve written communication and organization. The unit aligns with ideals of Theme-Based Learning. Theme-Based instruction helps to “engage the curiosity and increase motivation of students as they grapple with an array of real life issues” (Brown, 2015) and also employs the use of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
