We were both judged strictly on our appearance rather than our character. During the first week of school, Auggie was often thought to be stupid and unattractive because of the way he looked. For example, Auggie expressed a desire to take honors science, a statement that shocked his fellow classmates. They doubted his intelligence and ability to successfully complete the course. Additionally, people thought he was scary which made it very difficult for him to make friends. While I was still new to the school, many were astonished to find out I was taking multiple honors classes, doubting my academic abilities. I also surprised people when I revealed my strength in P.E. My classmates made their own conclusions about me based on my size and demeanor instead of getting to know me. Both Auggie I had to overcome incorrect first impressions of our peers based solely on our physical features.
When comparing myself to a character, Auggie Pullman stands out as one that reflects my own personality and experiences. We’ve both grown and developed from the guidance and direction of our parents which has shaped us as individuals. Placed in new environments, Auggie and I have both learned to step out of our comfort zone and meet new people. We also proved to our peers the faults of judging based exclusively on looks. These comparisons clearly demonstrate how Auggie Pullman and I are so similar
