Band Leadership Audition - Short Essay Questions

1. As a leader, how will you encourage and motivate other individuals?
Motivation is achieved through praise. If students are complimented on their effort, they will often perform higher and have a higher sense of motivation. However, blind praise yields spoiled results. I will expect excellence out of my peers. I will make sure to voice those expectations, and help my peers set reasonable short-term goals to accomplish the exellence we strive for as a band. Enthusiasm is another important factor in leadership. I have noticed that our leadership this past year was very enthusiastic and excited about upcoming events and competitions. This roused the other students in a way that motivated

Over Spring Break this year, 7 or 8 of us went to see a movie, which spawned some hilarious jokes and phone wallpapers. We all enjoyed that, but it's rare for anyone to bring up an idea like. I hope to reverse this, and improve relationships between my section members.
For the Band program: The whole Band should strive for excellence in every form, on and off the marching field or stage. Students should have high standards of excellence and responsibility for their attendance, their peers' performance, and their own. I hope to see students with high levels of self-discipline in their practice to produce higher results during Marching and Concert seasons. Leading by example is the best way to accomplish these goals, and I know that I can lead my fellow Band members in confidence throughout the season.
These goals for my section and the entire Band are not just goals for others, they are my goals as well. It will be an accomplishment for all of us, and will bring me immense pride to see these characteristics in our students.

In order to be effective, a leader must have an unwavering passion for their projects. I have found through my time with The Pink Bowz, the more excited I become about something, the more excited everyone else becomes. However, when a leader loses enthusiasm for what they are doing, they set a bad example for their peers. I have personally failed as a leader before because I developed apathy towards a project, and my teammates began to adopt the same attitude.…

I believe that I can accomplish any obstacle that stands in my way and I’m not going to let anything stop me. There have been numerous times this year and last year where I have been the leader and I have stepped up for “The Band” and “My Section” because of the love I have for it. For example: All the trombone “fanfares” and movements have been my ideas and I have collaborated my ideas with the other members of my section which have led to success during the football games. Another example is when the band was entered into the martin Luther king parade (2010) and Mr. Green needed people to stay after and develop a dance routine for the band with alumni and others. I was one of the volunteers to stay and help out which was a great idea because I was able to bond with the alumni and other older college students to get their advice and opinions for not only the dance routine but for my life. Another example is when the band was invited to perform for the faith world fundraiser (2010) and Mr. Green needed a student to be a “Fill-in” drum major for that day. I stayed after to volunteer and I was chosen and after that day I worked my butt off to help Corrine and assist her with the dancing for the performance which was a success for us and the band. Last year was my first year of…

Marching band is analogous to a machine. All of the components must properly function in order to complete a certain task. Therefore, each member should possess dedication in order to produce a triumphant show and capture the audience’s attention. If one member fails, the whole organization collapses. Through these experiences, I learned that determination and dedication contributes to a successful lifestyle. Otherwise, dreams could never exist.…

As a member of nearly two years with Seminole, I have been able to experience an atmosphere of genuine love and acceptance that I now hope to further encourage and foster. This will be my sixth year as a part of the marching arts, during which I have had the privilege of playing and marching for two different ensembles, as well as maintaining leadership roles in both (leading two front ensembles and being relied on heavily at my place of prior attendance). With all the time I have dedicated to learning and plying my craft, I now seek to instill in others that same sense of wonder, amazement, and motivation that…

Although last year I was not given the position of Drum Major, I was awarded the title of “Low Voice Section Leader.” Being named section leader made me feel so honored, and I was ecstatic to be in the position. As a section leader, I truly experienced what it is like to be a leader in a marching band. Although it is difficult, it is definitely rewarding. Throughout the marching band season, people often approached me for advice and help, and I was delighted to be able to assist different people and see how much they improved with my aid and…

I have had many jobs over the last 10 years but I think there is one that left me the most knowledge when it comes to leadership motivation, and also I think that it left a positive impact on me. The company I am going to describe is Victoria’s Secret. I was the operations and staffing supervisor at one of the retail stores, my direct report was the brand delivery and operations manager and this is the person who I want to describe. She had excellent leadership skills, and even though some of the decisions she made sometimes didn’t seem fair they taught me how to be fair and to treat everyone with respect and equally. What I learned was that as a manager we should always make sure we motivate our team and recognize their efforts as well as coach their mistakes. Her biggest skill was the motivation of the team; if the team was happy and motivated then they would always do a better job. Some of the negative things that I observed from here where that sometimes she had preferences for some employees than others, and sometimes she didn’t give everyone the chance to grow and develop inside the company. Even though this was a negative impact, I learned that it was wrong and that everyone deserves a chance to evolve. (Williams, 2013)…

I understand that with this job comes great responsibility, and I am definitely ready for it! Being a member of the Orange Wave marching band for two years I have an idea of how to make band more attractive to everyone. Making the time spent in band class and at after school practices most effective is a major prerogative of mine. I would like to make it our number one goal to get every band member to learn, and memorize their music. This will allow the show to be ready as early as possible so it gives ample time to perfect formations, add character to the show, and make it our own. By doing this I know our scores will be significantly higher than last years. Most importantly each member will understand that hard work does pays off.…

Everyone in the band had one similar goal; to produce an excellent, if not, perfect marching show. Our band rehearsed the marching show day and night, sacrificing our prized hours to create a clean and entertaining show for audiences to enjoy. Water breaks were a blessing, conversations were a sin of the marching world, and mess-ups were lessons of resilience. Our band director made sure the idea of efficiency was planted…

Last year, our game was strong; the band obtained a rating of two at state finals in Brunswick, Ohio. It was marching season, not football season. With eight incredibly talented seniors on various instruments, our season was substantial and awe-inspiring. Those seniors took charge and impelled us to victory. Also, the music was an upper level composition wrote for experienced hands and mouths. The Shenandoah Marching Band only had four Jr. High members in its midsts: Cameron Kolbank, Lorrin Wiley, Corey Feldner, and Deanna Mick. Although, after losing so many seniors last marching season, the band has been forced to call upon eight Jr. High band members to engage at the high school level in the marching program. This year with the new additions,…

We had an amazing year this year, getting two superiors, but we can’t just rest. We have to keep working, thrive to be the best we can be. This year, my first year in Color Guard and Marching Band, I’ve learned discipline and what it means to be a part of something bigger than me. Working with the other girls on guard, we work as a team to learn our routines and how to stay in sync with our flags which takes a lot of hard work and repetition. During our long, strenuous rehearsals, it is important to stay focused and pay attention to directions. By setting an example for the younger members, I hope to show them what it takes to be successful in what we do, because it cannot be done without a huge amount of commitment and pride to represent West and our Marching Band program.…

With a wide spread of my arms and a clench of my fist, the last notes of Panic! at the Disco's song, "Victorious" came to an end. As I called the band to attention and to march off the football field, I knew the marching season for the Mead High School Marching Band was coming to an end after another year. I remember feeling jittery and excited despite the fact that I was composed before our eight minute marching show began. I hopped off of my podium, used my shaky hands to disassemble the platform, and exited the field to catch up with the band. Our performance at the St Vrain School District Band Night marked the end to my high school marching band career that started just four years prior.…

    Marching Band In Schools

The marching band is still a musical representation of the institution that the ensemble is located. The marching band serves as a large recruitment tool and an essential public relations vehicle for music departments all over (Cumberledge). Therefore, musicianship should not change nor diminish because of the type of ensemble. It’s been said that the earliest marching bands were the forerunners of today’s symphony orchestras, concert bands, and instrumental chamber music, as well as the modern marching band (Madsen, 2007, 54). The first marching bands have military origins with the sole purpose of achieving excellence and competing at extraordinary high levels of marching precision and musicianship (55). Therefore, the type of students you recruit is determined by type of ensemble you have. This is very prevalent at many HBCU band programs. The ensemble has its own character. Does the character of the ensemble promote the best in music? Does the character of the band promote academic…
