Her family had access to an attorney, so she and her family were able to be undetained a little earlier than the average person. Her early release, however, does not justify her being put into detainment. She and her family have been living in the country “for over eighteen years” and working hard like every other person in the U.S., and yet, she is denied opportunities just because of her ethnicity. Rasha was happy in the U.S. because it “was home” (Bayoumi 19). Bayoumi’s literary style of portraying Rasha as a typical teenage girl in America made the event of her family’s detainment more shocking because the officials held captive an innocent group of people. This shock also makes the audience become sympathetic to the other families who had to go through this inhumane period. Home is simply a place where someone finds a permanent residence with friends or family. Nowhere in this definition does it say home is our motherland. When one thinks about it, almost everyone is not living in his or her motherland, and this is due to globalization. The curiosity of finding ways to make the world more connected across continents contributed to the advancements made in human history. Every culture focuses on different aspects of life, so when a group of people with diverse views work together, an explosion of benefits is trickled down to every community and the world, but if the opportunity of having this master teamwork is denied, how will we even have the chance to amend relationships and start over? Yes, these diverse views can make it difficult to understand one another, which means conflicts may arise. Thus, an advertisement was made to show how the Muslim community is often told to go back to their motherland by white people, even though their home is located in Toronto (The Star). At the bottom of the advertisement, it says “Muslims are part of Toronto.” The ad is portraying the message Toronto would not be as great as it could be if it weren’t for its diverse community.
