Becoming A Nurse: Personal Statement
Personal Statement
To be honest, unlike many others, I cannot claim that becoming a paramedic was a childhood dream. My initial interest in the medical field developed rather recently. It was a subject titled ‘Introduction to Nursing Assessment’ that inspired my desire to work within the health sector. Throughout my nursing career up until this point I have not thought about way I practice nursing the way I do. I have always been a caring person. There have been many occasions in my life that I have spent time in hospitals, nursing homes and by the side of a sick relative. When my grandfather was dying of cancer, he spent as much time as he could at home with his family by his side and when the time came, he was transferred to hospital, I was 14 at the time, still very young I knew it was not about how I was feeling, this pain was his and my grandmothers. I helped look after him for the two years he was diagnosed and it was during that time, I knew where my heart was and that was nursing. With my own experience of being in and out of hospital with two complicated pregnancies, I was in awe of the nurses and midwives who did everything they could to make me feel secure and safe, I was inspired and made an already certain career choice, even more evident.…

Whilst growing up I experienced the care and devotion that Nurses provide children with whilst they are in Hospital when I was hospitalised myself; witnessing this again many times when my siblings or cousins were in Hospital. I was in awe of how kind and dedicated the nurses were to their patients and from then I have had a powerful desire to follow in their footsteps. Child Nursing is an extremely challenging, but overwhelmingly rewarding, career path that I have wished to pursue for many years, it was when I began to care for children with disabilities, two years ago, through a local charity that the idea of becoming a Children’s Nurse was entirely cemented into my mind.…
