Being Poor By Thievery
Being poor is the recipe for a hard life.Being poor as a 5 foot 9,145 lb,15 year old kid with giraffe legs and arms thinner than wire hanger is even harder. This was the case for Marvin.Marvin lived with his mom,dad,2 brothers and grandpa in a tiny apartment that was more like a dungeon than a living space. The apartment was dusty, dirty and cramped at all hours. The neighborhood he lived in was notoriously dangerous.Marvin hated his life and what he had to do to survive. He was a thief. He would steal stuff, sell it and buy stuff to help his family. Now Marvin was an outstanding thief so he was never caught.Marvin also had to juggle being a thief with going to school. His dad always told Marvin that if he did good in school he wouldn’t have to live …show more content…
that Marvin’s exceptional thievery would help them get out of their horrible situation. One day,February 8th to be exact,Marvin was walking home from school ready to begin his extracurricular activity of thievery. When he walked by the park, the other kids there would make fun of his hair color(red) and his skin color(white). This was routine. What wasn’t was when a group of kids began to throw rocks at him.”Get him,” one shouted.Marvin like ran like any sane person would do.Marvin raced down the sidewalk clearing 4 blocks in under a minute. The kids pursued, continuing to throw rocks at him.Marvin turned into an alley only to find a dead end.”pst.”Marvin turned and saw an old man with white hair and a goatee holding a door open for him.”In here”, the man said.Marvin ran past the man into the building. The man closed the door and locked the rusty deadbolt in place.Marvin heard the kids outside.”Where is he”, one said.”He’s probably in the next alley over you morons”, …show more content…
said.”No problem son”,The man replied.”What’s your name son”, the man asked.”It’s Marvin sir.””The name”s Cal son”, the man replied.”Marvin, I think I have a task that will put your skills to the test”, Cal said quickly.”Marvin answered, “What skills sir?” Call again answered quickly, “I know you’re a thief
Marvin.I see you taking wallets out of people’s pockets and taking phones and laptops from unattended backpacks.I know why you do it and I figure we can help each other by stealing the most sought after treasure ever.””What is it and how much is it worth”, Marvin said.Cal replied,”The treasure

is a sum of money hidden somewhere near London.Legend has it old, rich Marcus Lanson hid his fortune away somewhere as he had no relatives to inherit it.He left a note stating that to find the treasure you would have to solve his riddle to find his treasure.””Why didn’t he just give it to someone?”, Marvin asked.”Legend again has it that Lanson wanted someone worthy to inherit his fortune”,Cal said.”Ok but, where do I come in”,Marvin replied.”Marvin, you are an exceptional thief and
I can solve riddles so we can help each other find the treasure and split it 50/50”, Cal said.”Marvin are you in or out?”Marvin thought long and hard,if you consider 5 minutes long, when he

Before Marvin’s game his dad, Mr. Whalen, asked Marvin if he wanted a ride down to the school and Marvin then replied with “No. Thanks, Dad, but no. It’ll do me good to run down there.” (435) This act shows how Marvin is not lazy and knows how to prepare for the game. In addition to warming up he rests, he also knows what to eat and how much. Mrs. Whalen was nervous that her husband, Mr. Whalen, would end up getting caught in the excitement of the game. He promised her that he wouldn’t. When they got to the game, Mr. Whalen eyed the big center before the game started. During the game the big center would not stop fouling Marvin and, “again the big center fouled Marvin.” (439) This act could cause Marvin to get seriously injured, but instead he ignores it and takes his shots. The big center’s dad was speaking harshly about Marvin and saying Marvin should get called instead of his son, Guido. Ironically Mr. Whalen, “who talked long and seriously to Marvin about sportsmanship,” (433) ends up getting into a brawl at one of Marvin’s basketball game over this. Right before this had happened Mr. Whalen’s wife told him that he should go take a smoke because he was getting too excited, and she was trying to help him relax. Unfortunately Guido’s dad caught him at the wrong time. At the end of the fight the principle talked…

Having never met their colored family members before, Greg and Mike were dropped off at their Aunt Bessie’s house as their alcoholic father attempted to find a job to support them. The boys quickly had to learn the rules of what was acceptable for them and what wasn’t now that they were considered colored boys. Even though the school was technically integrated the boys struggled and had to decide where they fit in. Both the colored and the white students rejected the boys at first because neither race could accept that Greg and Mike were white colored boys. Buster let his children know that both the whites and the blacks would want to fight them and they would just have to fight back and stand strong against everybody. Growing up, the boys continuously got in fights with both races until some members of the black community finally accepted that they were one of them. When the boys were forced to go live…

I learned a lesson all the way back in first grade, and that lesson has stuck with me ever since. I was coming in from recess, and I was talking to a friend of mine off to my left. Unfortunately, I was not watching where I was going. I kept barely taking glances of what was in front of me, and that was a huge mistake. Someone was running behind me, and wasn’t watching where they were going either. As I approached the building I heard yelling, but thought nothing of it. After all, recess had just finished, so obviously kids would be yelling, right? It turns out some kids had been playing tag, and decided to play until they got inside. One that was still running away, because God forbid he’d be “it,” was Nick.…
