Bell Hooks: A Literary Analysis
Reading through both quotes from the two different authors, I completely engrossed myself into my thoughts to think about which was the best option, a common practice for me. I created a list inside my head of arguments for each, and realized this usual process is an exact example of bell hooks’ quote on education: “School was the place where I could forget that self and, through ideas, reinvent myself.” All of the skills and techniques that I have developed during my school years have made me into the person that I am today. I am a critical thinker, and enjoy looking at all solutions before attempting to solve a problem in my everyday life. School brought me up in such a way that the ideas and thoughts that I learned carried on into my personal life, and I believe that it evolved me into the person I wanted to become.
Before I was old enough to comprehend the impact that school would have on my behaviors and habits, I thought of school as a wonderful place to play with my friends and read stories filled with thousands of different adventures. Thinking back, those early days were the beginnings of the shaping of my personality. I was able to think for myself and enjoyed being able to present my true self in my writing, as I was a shy and awkward child. In my multiple stories that I wrote, I almost

During this time, my younger brother was born and the downfall of my parent’s relationship began. Home life was difficult, but surrounding myself in books and science projects comforted me and I was happy with myself. I learned that drowning myself in novels and tutoring others was the best cure to feeling upset about either family or friend drama, so I used this to my advantage from seventh to eleventh grade. As a result, I received Academic Awards and was placed on the Honor Roll every year and was extremely proud of this version of myself that I had

Similar observations are made by academic writer and author Sarah Graham in her book entitled Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye. In this book, Graham addresses a variety of reading techniques, themes, and comparisons/contrasts in regards to Salinger’s most popular novel, but she specifically addresses the main theme of Holden’s attempt to escape the phony 1950’s materialistic focused society surrounding him. Graham begins her take on this theme of escaping society with a chapter on Holden’s rebellion: “Developing the theme of rebellion, Holden’s visit to Mr. Spencer confirms that he is opposed to the conventional ideas that school and society encourage in order to promote stability” (34). During this visit to Mr. Spencer’s house that Graham…

I enjoyed this book by Bell Hooks far more than I did Creative Schools by Ken Robinson. I thought this author had a better ability to lay out her thoughts and explain to the reader more efficiently her ideas. The chapters were fifty percent shorter as well, which helped the reading feel less drawn out and lengthy. The author did a better job providing examples from her life that related to the subject than Robinson did, although they were also rather lengthy. Creative Schools tended to have the examples seem more like tangents rather than supporting a point unlike this book so far. Although the Hooks’ experiences were valid, at some parts the story felt a little overwhelming with the larger vocabulary usage and the overuse of the word “pedagogy.”…

At the age of six, my life took an unexpected turn when my parents migrated to the United States and I was forced to adapt to a new culture. At the time, I had no idea this drastic event would ultimately benefit and shape who I am today. I believed this would ruin my self confidence and progress in my education. I constantly battled to lose the label of the new, shy girl in class who blushed whenever she was called on. New situations constantly arose helping me learn about myself in the process. This drastic move taught me many lessons and allowed me to grow as a person.…

Fortunately, by the fifth grade my parents were able to rent an apartment nearby our school and had found jobs in multiple Brownsville restaurants. After the move, things became much easier and we were able to have a much simpler life, though we were never able to forget the hardships we experienced and the effort we put into enhancing our lives. Today, I am sure my successes as of now are gratifying my parents as I am in the top 10% of my class, the Co-Captain of the Golden Stars Dance Team, member of the National Honor Society, Piano Club, HOSA, and in TRIO UTRGV talent search program. I attend rigorous AP classes to improve my opportunity to attend a university and have the finest future I can give myself. Although my triumphs may not look like much to most, I can assertively say that the trial of going through difficulty to have a superior future has been overcome with the comfort of focus, strength, and the right set of mind to build a better tomorrow for my family and…

In high school, we grow so much as people that we tend to forget where we started. This applies to not only our personalities, but our academic abilities as well. I suppose this is obvious, as it is four years of school, but the magnitude of this growth never fails to surprise me. As I looked back at the writing pieces I created in ninth grade, with misplaced commas and awkward wording, all I can think of is how different my writing is today. The poem I wrote was created as a way to track and remember the changes I encountered each year.…

Meanwhile, I was panicking inside, and I did not know who I could confide in besides my mother and “Ms. Kaladevi”, one my favourite teacher when I was at standard five. I grew up in a middle class family who taught me about the cultural and family values, for example, respecting and admiring the elders. I kept having intrusive, unwanted thoughts about not being good enough. I stood in front of mirrors, combing my hair over and over, trying to get it just right. I did not eat much, but I made myself feel better by eating few loaves of breads. I did not join any after-school activities; I kept to myself and just went through the motions.…

Freshman year I struggled with anxiety and coping with the family issues surrounding my Grandfather with dementia. Through therapy I learned how to fight through the obstacles that stood in my way. I have not let the issues I struggled with in the past define me, but I instead let them serve as a learning experience. Additionally, sophomore and the beginning of junior year I got a job which entailed me watching two kids every day after school. This job, along with the struggles I dealt with in the previous year, limited my involvement in extracurricular activities early on in my high school…

A small bit of historical information is in order to set the tone for this presentation. I was raised, as most young boys are, learning to read, write, and the other necessary evils of elementary education. My father was finally discharged from the U.S. Army Air Corp. and World War II, where he had been a Lt. Col., and taught the use of the Norden Bombsight to bombardiers and crews of the time. My early years were basically fun years, as I learned how to fish, shoot, hunt, about dogs, cats, and toys…many, many, toys. My mother believed in spoiling me, since I was the only child, and for eight years, I was the only object of me parents ' attention. In 1958, however, that situation changed forever, with the birth of my little brother, and three years later, my little sister arrived. These two events, little did I realize, would have a profound effect on my life. They would alter the way I felt about life, contribute to changes in my personality, and most of all, formed the basis for my later life in general, including my chosen profession.…

I began to shy away from short stories, and discovered that I quite enjoyed writing songs and poems. As school writing became more systematic and objective, I favored this type of writing due to its flexibility, subjectivity, and symbolism. I liked finding unique ways to express my feelings in a way that meant something to me without worrying about rigid grammar, and a clear thesis statement. I never felt the need to share my any of my work, though I had no problem doing so if somebody was ever interested. It was all very personal, and I found that the writing process itself was often therapeutic and just as fulfilling as reading through the finished product. I wrote because I wanted to. I wrote for…

I was never challenged or struggled at all regarding my studies during those years, which was most likely why school was so challenging when I entered high school. I became overwhelmed by the rigor of my AP classes and the 4,000 students scurrying through the hallways like ants. Being in such a largely populated school led to an insanely competitive environment that I was not accustomed to. I soon became deeply depressed, because I lacked confidence and was unhappy with who I was. I carried this heavy clump of apathy, fatigue, and general emptiness with me wherever I went no matter what. It got to the point of self-harm, which I still regret to this day, but the combination of medication, therapy sessions, and track and field helped me push through it and accept myself a little more. I still struggle with this from time to time, but I feel it has helped me focus more on my academics and athletics as a sort of distraction from the illness. I also feel that I became a new person. Someone who is more in control of her feelings and understanding of others and their own adversities. I learned then that life is not as seamless as it appears to be for some people, and it will always be a lesson I will never…

One of my greatest accomplishments was when I took that college class in General Engineering. It fit within my interests perfectly, and I learned so many new ideas from that class such as electrical parts, motors, lighting, and etc. The class also reinforced what I knew with computer programming and note-taking, giving me a taste of what I will experience in a STEM class in college. Choosing to take that class was one of the best experiences and academic achievements that I have taken, as it allowed me to take college credit. I have also undertaken great struggles as a result of the events that occur within my life. My father died in a few years after we arrived in America, and his death continues to haunt me in a few ways. I became a recluse and my academics dropped as a result of that. In addition, I did not take school as seriously as I should have been, which led to having awful grades by middle school. However, I improved drastically after recognizing my mistakes and sought to rectify them by planning out my assignments and giving myself the willpower to do these tasks. As a result of these changes, I grew to be a better student, as I was capable of getting straight A’s again, which is a result of my own hard work and…

About four years ago, I was sent away because I stopped attending public school. It was my first year of High school, and I was going through a lot of personal issues at home. Not to mention, I couldn’t understand any of the material that my teacher was teaching to the class. I felt like other kids were much smarter because they always asked questions, and seemed to understand more than I did. I had become very discouraged and insecure with myself, and my learning abilities. My mind was constantly in another place rather than paying attention to what was going on. I just couldn’t stay focused at all. I felt completely hopeless at times, so I finally stopped going to school all together.…
