In chapter 8, the dwarves travel through the forest of Mirkwood in search of where the forest ends. Bilbo dozes off into a sleep and when he wakes up he finds himself bound up by the sticky threads spun by a giant spider. With some difficulty, he frees himself and kills the spider with his sword he later names Sting. He passes out from exhaustion but once he comes back, he finds that he feels much braver. He intelligently thinks to put on his ring. With it he becomes invisible and goes looking for his friends. He finds the dwarves hanging in spider webs guarded by giant spiders. Bilbo entered the Mountain and descends through the tunnel. He feels the heat of Smaug and hears him snoring. He is determined to go on despite his fear. He then discovers the sleeping dragon is lying on a pile of treasures of gold, gems, weapons, and vessels. In, a moment of courage, Bilbo steals a cup and flees to the outside where the dwarves greet him.
