Biomedical Physics: Personal Statement
I sit on top of my horse in the center of the show ring, nervously waiting for the judge to make her final placings. I wonder if I did enough to prepare my horse for success, or if I executed each maneuver correctly. In the months before the competition, I spent numerous early mornings and late nights training. The experience of practicing over the years to compete with my horse mirrors the process of preparing for a future in medicine; both begin with a spark of interest that evolves into a challenging, yet rewarding, journey.

My interest in science developed early in high school through the encouraging words of a biology teacher. That carried on in my undergraduate career when I decided to major in Biomedical Physics, a unique and small degree program, which helped me integrate my interest in physical science with medicine. It became evident that I was to pursue a career in the science field, and during my time in 4-H I discovered the desire to serve others.

It profoundly influenced how I approach my academics and continues to challenge me to be my best self. As a result, I have accomplished staying on the Dean's list in my three years at university while working an average of 20-25 hours a week during the academic school year. Above all, this experience taught me a significant lesson- when you fall off, you get back up and try again.

This proved invaluable throughout my undergraduate career as I prepared for medical school. While pursuing research opportunities, I was able to apply for a research grant through the university. However, I soon received an email stating the proposal for funding had been denied. I desired to complete a project for the summer and took the opportunity to collaborate on a review essay for the online Encyclopedia of Cancer. The essay is not in its final preparation phase for

In school, I have enjoyed learning sciences especially when the topics are related to human conditions. Ever since learning about general biology in my junior high school years ago, I have on my own taken additional anthropology, psychology, anatomy and chemistry classes from a local college for further enrichment and have grown very fond of learning the complexity in human machinery and interaction. Occasionally I do find learning these topics too weighty to continue. Whenever that happens now, I would always manage to pull through by remembering that particular good day where I acted as 'an orthopedic doctor'.…

I can still vividly recall the eleven-year-old me fawning over the likes of Lawrence Krauss and Neil Degrasse Tyson. I was completely immersed in everything and anything pertaining to the vast universe beyond our seemingly insignificant world. I thought I had it all figured out. I would devote my life to being an astrophysicist and eventually earn my PhD. I would relish in the pink lettering on my wall that said “Dr. Mia”, but as I approach my late teens, my mind has been bombarded with what-ifs and buts. Irrespective of my change of heart, I still have an intense passion for math and science since it is how we explain the world around us, and that is why I have settled on biomedical engineering.…

I was introduced to the field I am interested in from my 9th grade biology class. Prior to the course, I had never taken biology or any science, for that matter, that had captured my attention such as this year-long experience. I was intrigued by the subject and fascinated with all the advances in society that have been made by scientists throughout the years. The possibility of being able to do this in the future kept me engaged and I further pursued this interest by currently taking AP Biology. In addition, I was inspired by the change that scientists can make through research and…

It convinced me to pursue a path in medicine, so I could learn how to work the intricacies of our internal wiring. Taking AP Psychology also opened to me the field of neurology- the foray into the complex chemistry of our brains. I found beauty in the brain’s delicate neural pathways that housed entire lifetimes of memories, and the unique ability of introspection. Along with classes, I participated in medical-oriented clubs such as Health Professionals of America, which helped me experience life in the medical field. As well as clubs, I was an active player in the Girl’s Basketball team in freshman year. I also take archery lessons to improve my dexterity and stamina, which taught me the importance of persistence for improvement. Both my family and my own interest in medicine inspired me to pursue a career path towards Biology in college. Since medicine is increasingly becoming more corporal, I chose to complete a double degree in Biology and Healthcare Management- an option that only UT Dallas…

I have been interested in science and math since I was reading books with science experiments in second grade. Applying math and science skills to solve everyday problems has intrigued me from an early age. I am always curious about how things work. Since taking AP Physics this year, I have been able to appreciate how math and science work together. I have taken other rigorous courses, but often it felt like learning math was isolated from other coursework. Math challenges me to problem solve and think at a higher level. I also love science, but until I took AP Physics my science classes were too easy. The labs in freshmen and sophomore science were enjoyable, but I never got a sense of how they connected to other concepts in Biology and Chemistry.…

My interest in Biomedical Science came about around four years ago when my dad was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He was treated with an intense course of chemotherapy and during this time it had me thinking about how and why a mutation in a cell can grow and cause a tumour and also how chemotherapy treatment can destroy the mutated cells (along with some healthy cells) and cause a person to have side effects such as skin discolouration, hair loss, loss of appetite and a lowered immune system. To be able to explore more in depth into what the body does has intrigued me to delve deeper. This is why I have chosen to study a degree in Biomedical Science. I had been out of education for quite a while, so in order to follow my chosen path…

Another reason i love science is animals. I have such a loving passion for animals and the fact that science is a subject that you can easily learn what kingdom they come from and also how they work and live. If you ever meet me I am one of the most curious people you will ever meet. I always ask why and how. Science always answers those two questions for me. I believe the fundamentals to success are science. Without science or the answers that science provides us we would not be where we are today in society. I attended middle school at MCA and took Biology as an 8th grader. However my freshman year i went to Greenwood and they were taking Biology as freshmen. I was lucky enough that i got to take it again. Additionally they let me take the advanced class! Since those two Biology classes it has become my favorite branch. It is the study of life and living…

When I was in high school, I had no inkling of where I was going, but I tested the waters. I volunteered at the Mrs. Tewillegar Wildlife Foundation and did a rotation observing anesthesiologists in San Francisco. In my young explorations I found that medicine and environmental politics peaked my interest.…
