In “Why Black Lives Matter Resonates” Leonard Pitts states his belief that Martin Luther King Jr. would be happy with the “Black Lives Matter” campaign because it is beneficial for African-Americans. Pitts writes about the counter campaign, “All Lives Matter,” as being a disgrace to the civil rights movement, and concurring that Martin Luther King Jr. wouldn’t be a part of it. I cannot agree with Leonard Pitts’ conclusion that King would be completely for “Black Lives Matter” and not completely for “All Lives Matter” because I believe if King were here today he would be advocating for equality of all people.…
A rising problem in our world today is police brutality. It is happening everywhere and little to nothing is being done to stop it. Then what is being done to help is being undone by rival movements, damaging media coverage, and violence against innocent people. The “Black Lives Matter“ movement was created to bring awareness to the atrocities facing the African American population today. But due to the reasons mentioned previously, their efforts aren't doing much or anything to help, and as more and more people of color are being executed the more tension builds between minorities and the police, which continues the vicious circle.…
The pressure existing in a negative environment lets people become more responsible in society because human beings are rational creatures and they know what is beneficial for themselves. When “Black Lives Matters” movements were posting on the Internet, people quickly make judgments about this social events because under the current social norms and social values, it is an extremely negative event. There are wars and political movements happen in every generation and never doubt, people are learning lessons from it. The unfairness treatments of African Americans in “Black Lives Matters” movement let people think about the similar political movement in the United States---the Civil War. African Americans were slaves and they had to work all day long without salaries. The white…
Making a powerful statement for black equality, African Americans took the world to its knees in the era of the 1950’s-1960’s by forming the Black Panther Party. This movement displayed an intolerance for harsh accusations, brutality and unjust treatment. At that time African Americans made a huge impact on every race, not just their own. The group wanted to ensure that all African Americans would have access to an equal opportunity in employment, education, housing, and granted entry to every public facility without being harassed with inscresiating words. In attempt to embed this matter in society, the Black Panther Party was formed to stop police brutality against innocent African Americans.…
Based on Brent staples talk, the black lives matter movement is justified. It is justified because black male and female lives are very unfair, there are many differences created between people based on their color of skin. In Brent’s essay he states, “After dark on the warrenlike streets where i live, i often see women who fear the worst for me.” The quote from Brent’s essay is an example is an example of a black male doing nothing wrong, doing the same the same thing as everyone else in the town, he’s just walking around minding his own business and he is getting judged for it. In Ted talk is is stated that the saying “Black lives matter” isn’t saying black lives are the only…
To maintain a free society and prosper within our American version, peaceful resistance to laws made by our legislative government are imperative not only to uphold our nation's Constitution but to the people's unalienable right to free speech. The American Republic was conceived in revolution and resistance to legislature. A plethora of the original framers of the Constitution were soldiers and essential leaders of the American Revolution; these citizens fought for our new Republic during the war and absorbed its political ideology. The Declaration of Independence, brought to life by Thomas Jefferson, said that the document was simply an "expansion of the American mind." He wrote that it is the "Right of the people to alter or abolish" any government, and institute a new one that would better secure their safety and happiness, which alludes to a positively-impacted free society we now take pride in today.…
Futterman, Chaclyn Hunt, and Jamie Kalven offer a unique perspective to the issue of mass incarceration and highlight how police brutality have motivated more youth to join movements like Black Lives Matter. The article focuses on how injustices black people in the United States relating to criminal justice have influenced “young people who insist on remaining visible, on being heard, and on placing issues of police accountability in the larger context of the structural inequalities and exclusion.” This rise in activism within the youth is a result of how the black community is viewed within the criminal justice system. Throughout the article, the authors…
It is interesting to see how different ideas are supported with different ideology but have the same goal. According to Du Bois, the black lives matter movement would not be the same movement, as we know it today, if he has not gone out to discover about other experiences. At first Du Bois learned about a color line ‘veil’ that could not be ignored. The only people, who could ignore it, were people who weren't educated. Because of this veil Du Bois valued his education because it made him different and it was this same education that made him believed that the color of your skin would limit how American you could be.…
The Native-American and African-American communities in the united states have undergone countless adversities since before the birth of America. The South held a stronghold on the institution of slavery, while American colonists robbed the indigenous people of their land and culture. After the civil war, however, the conditions of both groups changed dramatically. The residual tribes were driven to reservations and the slaves were freed. In the years immediately succeeding the war, blacks, due to a powerful Republican influence in the federal and state governments, were far better off economically, politically, and socially than their Native-American equivalents. While blacks gained suffrage and equality under the law, the natives lost their…
At Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana there has been protests about the Black Lives Matter movement. The Black Lives Matter movement “is a chapter-based national organization working for the validity of Black life” (Haki). The Black Lives Matter movement began in 2012. This movement is important because it is about equality. Equality is important because every life matters. The point of the Black Lives Matter movement is to show that one life does not matter more than another and that black lives just need some help and attention from everyone. So, to solve this controversy I am proposing raising awareness and small weekly meetings about the Black Lives Matter movement.…
I believe all people should be treated fairly, and you would think that would be a commonly held belief, but I get a lot of shit for it anyway. And so, I continue to march on and make my voice heard. Let me tell you about the first time I marched in the streets of Washington DC. I was 15.…
I have decided to choose the topic of black lives matter. The reason I that I chose this topic is because when I was a policeman, at the time the Michael Brown incident happened. I saw and heard a lot of things. Being an African American male and a policeman I could not be outspoken about the incident. At the time the department frowns on that type of news form their employees. I saw a lot of people rioting for what I felt was no reason. I felt that if Martin Luther King was alive today he would be so upset that people are doing such things. I feel that people need to begin at home and train people. I feel people need to be open minded about the subject. I remember that Brown incident started everyone automatically felt that the officer shot him with his hands up. The only information that was available was that Brown was unarmed. y watching everyone and America I believe the feeling is that black lives only matter when the life is taken by a policeman. Any other time that I saw that a black life was lost, by any other means but by police deadly force, it did not get the Black Lives Matter people protesting or anything like…
Both the black freedom movement and the women’s movement were vital to the progress of equality in the United States. These two groups of citizens have been considered inferior to the white, American male for nearly all of history. Black males slowly gained headway over women of any race with the right to vote in 1870, yet true equality of race continued to be a hope for the future. Following World War II, knowledge expanded and struggles continued to occur between white and black and male and female, sparking the evolution of rights movements. One may be inclined to believe the black freedom movement and the women’s movement were mirror images based on the goals each strived to achieve and the concentrated resistance of the South. However,…
“Most middle-class whites have no idea what it feels like to be subjected to police who are routinely suspicious, rude, belligerent, and brutal.”…
Looking over the gravel parking lot, filled with eager families entering the annual fall festival held by the friendly business known as Cox Farms, stood a controversial sign in the window, with a bold statement, Black Lives Matter.…
