Taking a look at local news outlets, we come take note of a common occurrence here in the Rio Grande Valley involving both illegal alien and narcotics smuggling. One day it’s a botched drug deal resulting in wounded or even fatalities, the other, a high speed vehicle chase involving local authorities with either illegal alien or narcotic smugglers ending in tragedy. Some are quick to blame the Rio Grande Valley’s poverty rate as the reason people turn to smuggling and how easily the lavish lifestyles and lucrative profits attract potential violators. We notice that the United States encourages people from Mexico and other countries to illegal enter the U.S. by providing social services including free housing, food stamps, and other federally or state funded assistance programs without proper screening. Immigration reform will continue to be a heated topic with presidential candidates and voters alike. The border wall was not designed to be pleasing to the eye, instead to send a clear message to individuals contemplating entering the United States
