Here we take a better look into the world of bottled water to answer the question: Is bottled water better than tap water?
Although bottled water tastes better than some tap water, it may not be any more beneficial than it. Both sources are highly regulated and must meet certain standards set forth by the Federal Drug and Food Administration. Some bottled water is but purified tap water anyhow. So which should the consumer really be consuming? Lets take a look at both sides.
First lets look at the different sources of bottled water; artesian well water, mineral water, spring water, well water and that’s right, you guessed it, tap water (purified, of course). Water that comes from an under ground source, for example, artesian water, may be more pure, but there is no proof that it is any cleaner than water from the tap or ground water. Water that comes from the tap, and is bottled, goes through a purification process before it hits the shelves. There are a number of ways to purify water and four are mentioned here in this article. Purification is the process in which bottling companies remove any minerals, particles, and other contaminants to make it safe to drink for the consumer.
Bottled water, however, is not the only water that has federal or state oversight, so do the municipal water companies. The Food and Drug Administration has set forth regulations and standards for anything from the way water is collected, how it’s bottled, and what can be contained in bottled water. Annual inspections are performed on water bottling plants by the FDA an in some cases, state agencies as well. The quality and safety of tap water is overseen by the Environmental Protection Agency. Although the standards for bottled water and tap water may be different, both the EPA and the FDA protect the consumer by implementing a high set of standards that the water companies must follow. Some bottled water companies go even further to abide
