determination ensured our frustrations and fears were defeated. This will leave a lasting emotional imprint, and has instilled in me the compassion needed to handle similar situations in the future. When a team succeeds, the efforts of one individual within that team can be diminished. I was able to relate that to the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) 360 Survey results lesson. The AST Shop which I am in charge of runs efficiently,, effectively, and morale is high. However, I was unaware that there are several issues within the shop that need to be addressed, and are affecting how I am viewed as their leader. I am deeply thankful for the feedback given on the LPI 360 survey, and vow to make the changes necessary to make the Air Station Miami AST Shop the best in the Coast Guard. When promises have been made to the unit, subordinates, or coworkers, it can clearly be seen if one follows through on them. This is why the Goals and Values class had the most meaningful and emotional impact on me. The strong foundation of values and morals that represents all that is ‘The Chief’ must start within oneself. All eyes are on me now, and I need to be internally honest and accept that I am not perfect. Credibility is an essential element of a good leader, and it starts with keeping my own promises. Moving forward, I will rely heavily upon what I learned at the CPOA, just as we relied on each other to complete the difficult tasks during the training.
My experience at the CPOA provided me with a clear vision of leadership, understanding that we cannot and will not achieve success without enduring failure. I witnessed camaraderie and teamwork on the Intermediate Ropes Course, and also gained insight into what my leadership was lacking while reviewing the LPI 360 survey. These skills, alongside the Goals and Values class, provided me with a priceless lesson on how to be a leader. Authentic leadership is learned through experience, and most importantly, it is earned. I am committed to constant improvement and am ready to embark on this exciting journey in leadership. I will embrace the challenge up ahead, and feel well prepared thanks to the skills I acquired at the USCG Chief Petty Officer Academy. Lastly, being a newly frocked E-7, I call upon my Chief’s Mess to guide the way, share their wisdom, and hold me accountable as I proudly accept my new first name.
Chief.
