Career Essay: Balancing School, Sports, And Work
Throughout my life I have focused on school, sports, and working. Balancing all three of these at the same time was very difficult, but I made it work. Challenging myself has been a big part of my high school years both in and out of school. After starting sports at the age of three, balancing school and sports became a daily routine. Through high school I have played soccer all year long and almost every day. Being involved in both high school and travel teams, 3v3 leagues, and winter leagues has built up my responsibilities and handling the pressure of keeping my schedule in line. Making money was also a priority I made for myself after I received my driver's license. I got a job at my local pool the year I started driving. This was only a summer job so after my soccer season in the fall, I looked for another job. I got hired at the local movie theatre and worked there throughout my junior year of high school. I returned to the pool in the summer because I enjoyed it so much and plan to keep returning throughout high school and college. …show more content…
Many family members of mine have gone into this profession so it has always felt normal to study engineering. I have taken, and am enrolled in, multiple engineering classes that have taught me more about the career including Introduction to Engineering and Design, Aerospace Engineering, and Principles of Engineering. For years I was set on becoming an engineer but I have recently found out that veterinary science fascinates me greatly, and my connection with animals would make it a job I love and enjoy. When I was younger I could approach any animal with open arms and even animals that would normally do poorly with new people came straight to me in a friendly manner. This behavior was absolutely bizarre to the owners. I plan on researching more on these careers to see which would fit myself the

First, a career in veterinary technologist and technician would bring me great personal satisfaction. I enjoy working, helping out, and simply being around animals. For example, Julie Legred, a veterinary technician and executive director at the National Association of veterinary technicians in America, says, “We do everything except diagnose, prescribe and do surgery. They often work in private clinics and animal hospitals, assisting veterinarians with the care of animals” ("Veterinary Technologist and Technician"). Without veterinary technologists and technicians,…

Today, I heard about a participation argument over trophies being gave for participating in sports. They get a trophy for playing the sport when they did not earn it. Parents don’t realize what they are doing to their kids by just giving them things without and work or earning it. I myself am against the idea of trophies for playing a sport or something unless you or your team did earn it.…

I grew up in a family where I was constantly told “girls should not play sport”. It has been very challenging for me from a very young age but other people’s opinions never stopped me doing what I wanted to do. Instead of letting it have a negative impact on me, playing sports gave me the drive and motivation to set myself challenging but realistic goals not only in my performance but goals regarding my current life affairs. As I grew older I started questioning how humans are able to carry out certain skills and movements within sport. This helped me gain an interest in trying to understand how the human body works.…

All children are required to graduate high school, but pursuing higher education is only recommended. While high school curriculum is designed to prepare students for higher education, students learn essential career readiness skills while enrolling in higher education classes. Since students are not obliged to pursue higher education, many students who decide not to continue their education lack the skills necessary for future careers. While some schools hope to implement career readiness for either all their students or for only the students who do not wish to pursue college, other schools do not want to offer career readiness programs as they believe that it offers incentives for students not to attend college. Schools should require all students to take career readiness classes as…

I attended the career fair event in the Carson Center with the intent to talk to people willing to employ Athletic Trainers. I had been looking forward to it, and soon realized it was not what I thought it would be. I had previously looked into a few of the participant’s companies and found a few that might be worth talking to. However, this number was few and far between for only Athletic Training jobs. Some of the people I talked to were more interested in me if I had a Pre-Physical Therapy track rather than just Athletic Training, such as Common Wealth Health Corporation, Wabash Christian Therapy, and Pro Rehab. Considering I have not yet decided if I wanted to just go into Physical Therapy or just Athletic Training yet. Meeting these people felt like I was almost incompetent with my future degree since I am leaning towards a Master’s in Athletic Training.…

As the young and naive children we were, adults always told us to never give up on our dreams. This statement usually applied to the impractical dreams of becoming president of the United States, transforming into a superhero, or playing alongside professional athletes. These were all big ideas and aspirations that fueled our carefree childhoods, and were appropriate practice for shaping the paths to our true passions we discover later on in our lives; particularly in high school. High school is where teenagers are able experiment and begin to understand themselves as individuals, rather than what everybody else likes to do. Of course there are exceptions to those who are the “followers” rather than the “leaders”, but I’d like to claim I had…

From a young age we’re asked what we want to be when we grow up, never how we expect to become when we grow up. I was well aware of what I wanted to become, but not sure how to get there until I started high school when my counselor explained to me the importance of having a full portfolio with a wide range of extracurricular activities. Then it became clear to me, I needed extracurricular activities to become who I wished to be. Throughout my high school career I’ve participated in several extracurricular actives such as math club, soccer and UIL One Act. In the future, I want to participate in these activities or anything similar to those I participated in high school.…

According to the Center of Diseases Control and Prevention, the American people should exercise for at least thirty minutes a day. Most adolescents obtain that physical activity by participating in high school athletics; on average, 73.8 percent of high school students compete in such events (Ball, Bice, and Parry). These activities are not always the best practices for physical fitness; fitness can be obtained in other, safer forms of exercise. High school sports should be discontinued in schools for various reasons. Physical injuries such as concussions and broken bones can eventually lead to sizable health issues later in life.
