of skills. First shift was from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. , this made me aware about how important time management and being at work on time is. Another skill working at Coney Island taught me is teamwork with co-workers. There was 4 of us per shift, and they was about 20 or so porters that worked there at the time. I had to work with people (mostly kids) that I didn’t know and sometimes I didn’t like. I learned to make the best out of any situation. So when I got paired up with a co-worker that was lazy, I eventually learned how to get around it and get the job done. The main lesson I got out of working at Coney Island is money management. When I got my first paycheck, It was gone within a 24 hour period. I had no knowledge of how to save money or to manage my income. After working there for awhile, I eventually learned how to not buy everything I see. Coney Island gave me the basic fundamentals of adult life. My second job was at the McDonald’s in the village of New Richmond. I started to work there right after I worked at Coney Island. Working there taught me about how important it is to work hard in life to get what you want. While working there, I experienced why everyone hates working there. The hours were horrible, the management was horrible and the staff always argued. Standing in front of a hot grill all day was dreadful, it showed me where you get if you don’t do anything with your life. That is why I quit after a month, I don’t plan on working at a McDonalds ever again. My last job, I got through a summer youth program that was at a UC job expo.
I got the opportunity to work at Spencer’s Aviary and Wildlife center in the village of New Richmond, this was by far, my favorite job. I got assigned to help build the park, I worked 5 days a week, 8 hour shifts, The work wasn’t the easiest but the management made the job fun, This helped me learn that even the toughest jobs aren’t that bad if everyone has a good attitude. I got to experience construction work, carpentry, and other forms of work. I also got to see and take care of a few animals. This job was fun, It made me want to go to work. This taught me that you can get a job that you enjoy and doesn’t seem like a job if you get the right opportunity.
Working at these jobs helped me learn several life lessons that will help me when I'm an adult. Working makes you realize the responsibilities that you need to keep a job, and to manage yourself even when it's tough . This is what marked my transition from childhood to
adulthood.
