To begin with, I first went to see Lou Chapman at the academic advising table which was probably a good idea because before going into a job, you need to know what are the academic steps you must take in order to get there. Lou ended up telling me about her job and how as an academic advisor, she is there to help the students decide what program is right for them and what the prerequisites are needed in order to enter the program. She also deals with students that want to pursue higher education (university) and change of program. Lou will …show more content…
be a useful contact for me because for next year, I will need to change into the police tech program so she could tell me what the prerequisites are for police tech. Also, if I don’t make it into police tech, she could advise me what other possible options I could do. To contact Lou Chapman, she said I could go directly to the academic advising office located in our school in case I had any more questions for her.
The second person that I went to see as mentioned above was the RCMP officer named Melanie Cyr.
Melanie Cyr provided me with a lot of information regarding the job of being an RCMP officer. She told me all about how when you apply into the RCMP, there is a one to two year waiting period before you get a job. She said that this point of the process includes a list of evaluations that you must do like a physical examination, psychologist examination and many more. However, she said that since we are completing a DEC, we won’t have to complete a knowledge test that she states is difficult and that many people even fail. I found it important to know that when going into the RCMP, there are no educational requirements needed other than a high school diploma. To go further into detail about the career, after being accepted, you must complete a 26-week training program at the Depot in Saskatchewan. Overall, Melanie Cyr provided a descriptive view of the job and this proves to be very useful for me because if I ever want to join, I already know the basic steps I will have to follow in order to achieve my goal. After talking with Melanie Cyr, she gave me a pamphlet that included the recruitment contact information ( the website: www.rcmpcareers.ca and the telephone number 1 877 726-7472) in order to find out more if I want
to. To conclude, I now have two new contacts in my network and although they might not be useful in the future, they were at least useful during the duration of my visit. Lou Chapman could be someone I could connect more on a deeper level since she works on campus, however as for officer Melanie Cyr, she became unhelpful to me as soon as I left the career fair. This shows that you can have networks contacts if only you make a point of seeing the again because if you don’t ever see them again, they will forget about you in a heartbeat.
