Case Description: Outside of my economic classroom, almost every Tuesday and Thursday since the beginning of the semester, I’ve noticed a somewhat disturbing trend. There is a male and a female who stand outside by the wall and whisper sweet nothings and intermittently kiss. There was one time that I arrived to class early and saw them and then five minutes later realized I had to use the restroom. Upon coming back from the restroom, they were still there flirting and kissing. It reminded me of a high school relationship where couples said, “I love you,” “No, I love you more.”

The majority of the girls listen to music while doing their homework. The girls that are listening to music are usually studying by themselves and then there are groups of girls that sit at the tables in the dining hall to study together. The formal is a room with two doors that when shut block out the noise from the foyer, there are numerous couches and lamps nearby for direct light. I have noticed that although I do study in the formal and dining room, the majority of my studying is done in my room. It is easy to understand why girls study in the formal because of the silent background and comfortable areas to sit. It provides for the optimal studying place. Limiting the orienting response and acclimating, we can see the formal as an association to getting to business. In the kitchen, one can situate themselves at one table, spread all their work out, and work alone with minimal distractions. I personally have learned that I can’t be around other people when I am trying to study. Thus, it is nearly impossible for me to do a group study. My mind automatically connects being in a group as a social interaction so when I am in groups my mind is completely off the topic of homework. Alone in my room, I am able to concentrate by myself and know that if I don’t finish my work I have only myself to blame. This year I have conditioned myself to do homework in my room. This could be considered operant conditioning. The positive reinforcement is simply, getting my work done and being able to go out and hang out with my friends. The negative reinforcement would be to go on Instagram after finishing a certain amount of work. My negative punishment would be not being able to finish my work, getting a bad grade on the assignment, and thus, having a lower chance of receiving a good grade in the class. I make sure that I never get to negative punishment which is what pushes me forward. On the
