The Carbonated Soft Drinks Industry in Pakistan in the Context of Coca Cola

1. A Brief History
Coca-Cola Enterprises was established in 1986 as a young company by the standards of the Coca-Cola system. Yet each of its franchises has a strong heritage in the traditions of Coca-Cola that is the foundation for this Company. The Coca-Cola Company traces it’s beginning to 1886, when an Atlanta pharmacist, Dr. John Pemberton, began to produce Coca-Cola syrup for sale. However the bottling business began in 1899when two Chattanooga businessmen, Benjamin F. Thomas and Joseph B. Whitehead, secured the exclusive rights to bottle and sell Coca-Cola for most of the United States from The Coca-Cola Company. The Coca-Cola bottling system continued to operate as independent, local businesses until the early 1980s when bottling franchises began to consolidate. In 1986, The Coca-Cola Company merged some of its company-owned operations with two large ownership groups that were for sale, the John T. Lupton franchises and BCI Holding Corporations bottling holdings, to form Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. The Company offered its stock to the public on November 21, 1986, at adjusted prices of $5.50 ashore. On an annual basis, total unit case sales were 880,000 in1986.In December 1991; a merger between Coca-Cola Enterprises and the Johnston Coca-Cola Bottling Group, Inc.(Johnston) created a larger, stronger Company, again helping accelerate bottler consolidation. As part of the merger, the senior management team of Johnston assumed responsibility for managing the Company, and began a dramatic, successful restructuring in 1992.Unit case sales had climbed to 1.4 billion, and total revenues were $5 billion at the year-end. Presently The-Coca-Cola Company is the largest soft drink company in the world. Every year 800,000,000 servings of just "Coke" are sold in the U.S alone

These are some of the products offered by Coca cola aimed at different markets geographically and different segments of the market. Sparkling drinks accounted for 68% of Coca-Cola sales in 2011 while still and water beverages accounted for 28% of the sales volumes. The company has over 30 water brands aimed at generating value through the on the go immediate consumption occasion. The company distributes its products through bottlers who operate under franchises although recently Coca Cola has bought some of major bottlers (Coca Cola, 2013).…

Coca Cola began in 1886 when pharmacist John Pemberton in Atlanta, GA, sold a caramel colored mix that was combined with carbonated water and sold for $.05 cents a glass at Jacobs Pharmacy. The pharmacy sold approximately 9 glasses the first day totaling $.45 cents a day average. After John Pemberton passed away in 1888 the company rights were acquired by a business name named Griggs Candler for $2,300 (The Coca Cola Company, 2011). Candler led the way for the innovative product to become a business. He began promoting the product on everyday products so that the logo was everywhere and the aggressive tactic worked. The demand grew so quickly that there three production facilities were up and operating within 7 years. By 1920 there were over 1,000 bottlers of the product and in the 40’s the president helped to lay the international groundwork for the company to begin doing business overseas and ensuring that a Coke was available to many for a small price.…

    In 1886, John Pemberton who was an Atlanta pharmacist came up with a caramel-colored liquid and then he carried it over to Jacob’s Pharmacy. Once at the pharmacy the mixture was combined with carbonated water. Later on they put the mixture to the test by letting the customers at the pharmacy try it out and it was a success. They then started to sell the new concoction for only five cents a glass. The new refreshing drink was named Coca-Cola, the name was given by Frank Robison, who happened to be Pemberton’s book keeper. From 1888-1891 Asa Griggs Candler from Atlanta, Georgia secured the rights to Coca-Cola for about $2,300 and he then later became the company’s first president. By 1895, Asa G. Candler had build plants throughout the country in cities like Los Angeles, Dallas, and Chicago. In 1894, Joseph Bidenharm was the first person to put Coca-Cola in a bottle and he sent the idea to Candler, but it did not have much success. Five years later Benjamin F. Thomas and Joseph B. Whitehead secured the rights to bottle and sell Coca-Cola for only a dollar. Later on in 1923, Robert Woodruff became Coca-Cola’s president after his father Ernest Woodruff, who had purchased the company, had passed away. Robert Woodruff then spent about 60 years globalizing Coca-Cola. Then after 70 years of success, Coca-Cola decided to incorporate new flavors: Fanta, Sprite, TAB and Fresca. In 1960, Coca-Cola bought the Minute Maid Company adding juices to the company. A few years later in the 1980’s Roberto C. Golzueta became the chairman of the Board of Directors and the CEO of the company. He organized numerous US bottling operations into Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. and he also introduced diet coke. In 1990 new beverages were introduced to the company and by 1997, Coca-Cola would sell 1 billion servings of its products every day.
