Next, I will go into the client factors that hinder or support JV’s life and explain the performance skills that were observable during service learning. JV values himself as independent and understands he is not capable of doing some of the occupations he desires. However, he does value what he can do and is not timid to try an activity that might hinder his performance. As mentioned before, JV feels connected to others and is able to express himself when he attends Freedom Fellowship, which accounts for his spirituality client factor. Furthermore, his disability does not affect his body functions or body structures. JV’s performance skills are hindered because of his cognitive disability. JV is high-motored function, he has good balance and
has a normal gait pattern, but his coordination is affected because of his cognitive disability. JV also has a difficult time through interaction and trying to convey his message. Through observations, I observed him having difficulty communicating due to not having the speech ability to fluently pronounce words correctly. For his performance patters, JV did mention his routine usually consists of staying home with his mother and watching movies. One of his observable habits that affect his health is smoking. During the time his grandmother passed away, in 2010, JV began to drink alcohol and picked up on this bad habit of drinking every day. After a few doctor visits, JV has stopped drinking alcohol and is working hard to break from smoking (JV, personal communication, October 25, 2017).
