The mission of United Way is to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good. United Way advances the common good by creating opportunities for all. United way focuses on education, income and health—the building blocks for a good quality of life and a strong community. The goal of United Way is to make sure young people are prepared to start school, are able to read at a young age and graduate from high school and possibly continue on to college. United Way adopts a comprehensive approach to education that spans all the way from children to young adults. United Way believes in a path to success, and that path begins early, they provide a strong foundation which has helped more than 15 million parents, grandparents and caregivers turn everyday moments into fun, educational opportunities for young kids.
The United Way initiatives tackle issues like educational programs for children to young adults. United Way’s Born Learning gives practical tips for parents to help kids start school ready to succeed. MyFreeTaxes.org is an online, free tax preparation service for young adults, working families and anyone earning less than $60,000 a year. 2-1-1 is a confidential health and human services hotline. 15 million parents benefit from United Way’s Born Learning tools, tips and educational materials. What are the non-profits strengths that help it to be successful? (Internal and/or external).
When it comes to large nonprofits like United Way there comes many strengths and weaknesses. For instance when it comes to the idea of measuring improvements in their educational programs United Way has strengths due to its emphasis on outcomes and improvements. It also has set timeframes for measurement in years not months.
Some of the limitations of United Way may have been underestimating challenges of measurement for staff and the need for teaching assistants after initial training. Also there are insufficient links to quality tools and examples for the staff.
William Aramony, CEO of the national organization for over 20 years, retired in 1992 because of allegations of fraud and financial mismanagement, of which he was subsequently convicted. He was sentenced to 7 years in prison and fined $300,000.

United Way Worldwide is the leadership and support organization for the network of nearly 1,800 community-based United Ways in 45 countries and territories. The name is known all over the world and the 124-year history is a testament to how effective they
