Last night I had the pleasure to hear Julie Lagacy speak for Northern Illinois University BELIEF Week. Julie is the Vice-President of Finance Services Division at Caterpillar. She is married and has two children. I am very sure her family is proud of her.
Julie talked about how Caterpillar employs about 125,000 workers. They have a code of conduct that they started back in 1925 which is a value based system. They motto in this area is be present, seek, share, listen and champion. She said it is important to listen to the group to build a culture where people understand the value and act in an ethical manor. The next key point was Rock Solid which is potential, position, plan, people, and performance. At Caterpillar they strive to build reliable, tough and durable. In 2012, Caterpillar spent over two billion dollars on research and development. They felt that this would not only help them today but in the future as well. When they say they are rock solid they focus on efficiency and effectiveness process in their team, trade, tax and infrastructure.
She mentioned the construction industries, resource industries like mining and harvesting resources such as coal and iron. She also talked about producing great products but also supporting them through out the life of the equipment. Julie mentioned when you buy from Caterpillar you are buying a guarantee. I think this is really big in ethic because if you say you are going to do something you should be found keeping your promises. More than two-thirds of their sales come from outside the United States. When they say they support the code of conduct this also includes making sure suppliers follow the same code of conduct as well.
Caterpillar has a “values in actions” which includes integrity, excellence, teamwork and commitment. She noted without a value as a base nothing else is really possible. The truth is what you say are only works until you put action behind them. For example
