Alone, unwanted, abandoned, and forgotten are just some of the things elders go through. Elders are sometimes just left at a senior homes or hospitals because they are unable to care for themselves. Elders are forgotten by their kids or even grandkids forget. Elders get treated differently as well they get treated with lots of sympathy and sadness. The challenges elder’s faces aren’t always fair.
One of the challenges elders’ faces that aren’t always fair is being abandoned. As you become older you get abandoned by friends, and maybe the odd relative, but when you’re an elder almost everyone abandons you, like in “Forsaken” the mother almost died for her baby when in the end she was abandoned. Your family might put in in a nursing home or in a hospital, let the nurses and doctors look after you. Family might visit once and a while but they still aren’t there for you when you were there for them.
Another challenge elder’s face is being treated differently. Elders get treated with lots of sympathy everyone feels bad for them because they are losing their hearing and vision. They also get treated like they are not there or ugly looking kids get scared or aren’t interested in the elderly when they got so many amazing stories to tell.
Last challenge elder’s face is disrespect. Elders get disrespected because kids think they are more superior then the elders like in the story “The Rink” kids vandalize Mr. Given’s house. Kids disrespect elder’s by not holding the door for them, joke about how slow they are, and avoiding the elderly.
Elders face challenges that aren’t always fair like abandonment, forgotten, and unwanted. That can change if kids spent time with their grandparents or even other elder’s and treat them with respect. Elder’s aren’t here forever so listen to them and respect them and maybe give them a visit.
