Atticus finds our why people do the things they do before judging them. Bob Ewell was mad at Atticus so he went and spit at him. Atticus, being a good person and father doesn’t lash out on him, but walks away. Another thing is when the town talked bad about him for defending Tom. He was doing what was right and the town disgraced him and talked about him but he still didn’t get mad at anyone. By doing all these things, he is setting a good example for Jem and Scout. …show more content…
Atticus doesn’t hurt his kids when they do something wrong.
Jem cut off the tops of all Mrs. Dubose’s flowers. Any “normal parent” of that time would beat Jem for doing this. Atticus is different though, he knows that it is not right to hurt the children even if they deserve it. Atticus makes Jem’s punishment for cutting off the flowers reading to Mrs. Dubose. Even though Jem and Scout don’t know it at the time, they are helping her get over her Morphine addiction, which makes up for it. If Atticus beat Jem for this, Mrs. Dubose might not have gotten the help from Jem and Scout and she might not have gotten over her addiction. So with Atticus not hurting his kids, he helps his kids and other
people.
Atticus lets his kids do what they want to certain extent. With this, Atticus (and people like him) is helping the world break out of the bad traditions that they are in. If people like Atticus never existed, many people (women, blacks and more) may not have had equal rights. He lets Scout wear pants and overalls, which is not done by girls but doesn’t care. Another thing is he let them go to court. Most parents think that is a bad idea but he is teaching them that the world isn’t always fair. By doing these things, the children can make their own identities in society.
With these points, Atticus benefits his kids and the community by teaching them valuable lessons. Atticus isn’t mean to anyone so he is helping others realize that they should be kind and courteous to everyone. Atticus doesn’t hurt his kids when they do something wrong, he just makes them do things that teaches them not to do it again and helps people in the community at the same time. Atticus lets his kids do what they want to certain extent, by doing this, he is teaching them to be independent and to take care of themselves and others. This is what makes Atticus a good parent.
