In the book, The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien, Bilbo is a hobbit that is trying to live his life in peace and Tranquility. But then a soon to be a close friend named Gandalf comes around. His goal is to convince Bilbo to join him on an expedition. An expedition that will span across the land and ultimately modify him. “You are not the hobbit you once were “, shapes the transformation of the protagonist Bilbo Baggins. In the novel The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien, Bilbo Baggins character grows throughout the novel “The Hobbit”. In the beginning he is a shy, peaceful and self-absorbed hobbit who stayed nowhere but his hobbit hole, that also loves routine, then he has an unexpected surprise visit by a wizard named Gandalf who offers Bilbo a chance to go on an adventure. Bilbo ends up saving the party from many dangerous situations at first he finds hard to believe. Bilbo has no idea what’s ahead of him, however, the end of this novel Bilbo is a brave warrior whose eyes have been opened to the world outside of the Shire, a homeland of the hobbits. At the end of this story, Bilbo is a changed hobbit. Therefore I agree with the quote from Gandalf “You are not the hobbit you once were”.…
A hero is someone or something who helps others with an honorable purpose, or a person who possesses traits that others could see as the traits of a role model. In my mind, Frodo Baggins holds these heroic characteristics and, in the end, made choices to assist the well-being of his companions. Frodo’s efforts display that he is concerned for the future of all living things and does not act simply based on his own wants. For instance, when Gandalf questions Frodo of the Ring’s prospect, Frodo chooses to eliminate it. Though he would be destroyed, as well as others, it proves later that he did not do it to benefit only himself. Furthermore, in a meeting discussing the Ring’s future, Frodo volunteers to bring it to the evil land of Mordor. Any…
Leaders lead groups of people or organizations. Groups would not function to its full potential without the presence of a leader. Chiefs take charge of tasks at hand. Ships do not reach their destinations without captains. Kingdoms do not excel without kings. Beowulf demonstrates real leadership. He shows strong attributes of a great leader such as kindness, loyalty and courage.…
Whenever it says that Bilbo is on the took side of his family it means that he is like one of his family members that stay at their house and never go on adventures.Usually whenever someone stays at their house they never really learn anything about nature or their surroundings. When someone is not use to there surroundings then that means that they will never know anything about where they could hide from something bad that is trying to kill them or chase them. This is an example of Bilbo Baggins but whenever he went on this adventure it changed him and the things that I will tell about when he came out more often is in chapter 5,chapter 2,and the last example when he finally came out was chapter 1.…
Inherit the Wind is an intense drama written by Robert E. Lee and Jerome Lawrence based on the John Scopes trial of 1925. In this story, Bert Cates is put on trial for going against the Tennessee law prohibiting the Evolutionary theory of the creation of mankind being taught in schools. With the trial being held in Hillsboro, most of the people at the event were against Bert Cates with it being so unorthodox. Some people though, shared Bert Cates's logic. E.K. Hornbeck, a mid-thirty year old city dweller and journalist who, through his writing skills, helped prove Bert Cates’s innocence.…
Everyone has a chapter in their life they don't read aloud, maybe it's just dark and too deep to get into. We all have a dark side, even the heros and the good guys. In fact there's this hero, Bilbo, who has a dark side of his own. There are many protagonists and antagonists in The Hobbit, but let's face it, the only real problem and solution is the main character, Bilbo himself. Bilbo is not only the main character in The Hobbit, but also is his own protagonist and antagonist. Throughout the book, there are multiple ways all these sides of Bilbo are shown; the attack from the spiders, escaping the goblins, and helping the dwarves. All of these examples, include one important item, the magical ring.…
As Grendel is trapped in the tree he learns that not everyone will be there, especially when you need them the most. “Please, Mama!’ I sobbed as if heartbroken.” (Gardner 19) As Grendel stands with his foot trapped he is utterly hopeless and yells for his mother however she is nowhere to be found. Grendel learns that he must be by himself and be his own person, even in the most dire of times. As the bull rushes in too pulverize Grendel the bull hits too low. “But that was all. The tree shuddered as he banged it with his skull,” (Gardner 21) Grendel physically learns how to dodge a bull but most importantly he learns that he can handle things on his without the help of anyone which furthers this belief that he can be his OWN person, not one…
In the fantasy novel The Hobbit, by J.R. Tolkien there are a lot of obstacles the character Bilbo Baggins has to confront. Throughout the book Bilbo seems to take on different challenges, which allow him to mature faster in a way that the Shire would not allow. In the Shire, Bilbo was just a normal hobbit who minded his own business and was never late for dinner. But after Gandalf and the dwarves came knocking on his door, his whole life seemed to change in an instant and it kept changing in a way that Bilbo had no control over. The farther that Bilbo moved through this journey the more he opened up to the world. At the shire Bilbo could have been considered a child in some ways because, he knew of no evil that existed outside of his world other than stories he had heard. There are many prime examples of how Bilbo was turned from a simpleton into a hero. The whole book seems to be a simple metamorphosis of how someone can change just by going through an adventure with new people and trying new things. From moving on to a new life to having to look death directly in the face, the maturation of Mr. Baggins is definitely pointed out here clearly and should not be overlooked by the reader.…
In this assignment, we had to read “The Hobbit” by J.R.R. Tolkien and “How to Read Literature like a Professor” by Thomas C. Foster. Once both books were read, we had to take at least one archetype and compare it to the events in the book. “The Hobbit” tells of lonely Bilbo Baggins that enjoys his peaceful life. He is convinced to go on an adventure with the wizard Gandalf and the thirteen dwarves to steal back the dwarves’ treasure from Smaug the dragon. Throughout the story, the group goes through a rollercoaster journey and even experience death in the time throughout the adventure.…
The adventurous epic, The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien, takes the reader on a journey through Middle Earth where we come across many races, such as: Humans, Dwarves, Elves, Goblins, Trolls and of course Hobbits. Most of these races have leaders who are either good or bad for the position. Whenever a leader is not right for the role, someone might rise up and take charge. Good leaders do what is right for their people, whether it be to protect them, keep order among the races or with the nature around them.…
In the novel Grendel, by John Gardner, portrays Grendel's characteristics altering as he meets new characters; throughout his journey to mankind. Mankind teaches him vast new knowledge he's never understood. His nihilistic and solipsism is formed through the characters in the novel; envy and anger are also shown. He plays big roles in terrifying the Danes and somewhat of the Geats; they mold him into the monster they fear the most. The characters, shaper, man, and the dragon shape Grendel into the monster he so desires. They teach him of lies, false glory, brutality, never ending violence, and wisdom.…
Probably one of the greatest questions of the 19th century comes directly from John Gardner’s novel Grendel. Given a world with no inherent meaning, how should one live his or her life? Grendel lives in a world that he is not supposed to be in, acting out on emotion. Grendel represents the animalistic traits of humans. His actions are primitive and based around society’s acceptance throughout the novel. Grendel portrays a ridiculous character that is convinced we are born a certain way, and no matter how badly it will never change.…
In Hamlet, many think of Hamlet as being the main or only tragically flawed character within the play. However, in actuality, the play contains many other characters that possess varying severities of imperfection, some of which put the shortcomings of Hamlet, the title character of Hamlet, to shame. Despite the tragically flawed nature of Hamlet’s character, other characters in the play are clearly more flawed in comparison to Hamlet. As a result of this character’s imperfection, many of the characters within the play Hamlet are considered tragic; however, those in which this trait is predominant are Claudius, Laertes and Gertrude.…
At first glance the reader may think that The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is just another fictional story about talking animals and children running around a mythical land named Narnia. The book is an allegorical piece of literature relating characters from the book to characters in the Bible. In Clive Staples Lewis’s novel, the author uses the symbol of the stone table and the symbol of the hero to convey to his readers the theme of Christianity in the novel.…
