Characterization Of Valentine
Valentine is the middle Wiggin sibling – two years younger than Peter, two older than Ender – and the only girl. She is kind and empathetic, and represents the super-ego in this metaphor. The super-ego is essentially the hub of morality. It begins to develop at a young age and is shaped by parents and similar authority figures, things that children view as “higher natures.” “When we were little children we knew these higher natures, we admired them and feared them; and later we took them into ourselves” (Freud 18). The super-ego is all the things one has been told to be, and all the things they have been warned not to be. It is right versus wrong.
Valentine's character, at least from Ender’s perspective, is a pillar of moral uprightness. She is kind and good where Peter is vicious and cruel. Where Peter was rejected from Battle school for being too harsh, Valentine was rejected “because she was too pacific, too conciliatory, and above all, too empathic” (Card 255). Unlike both of her brother’s, she is not prone to acts of violence, and expresses an amount of disgust for said acts, from Peter’s skinning of squirrels, to Ender’s ruthless and casual crushing of a wasp.

Whether this is a protest on behalf of fairness, or an attempt to protect her younger brother, Valentine is attempting to do the morally right thing, despite her awareness of the very real danger Peter poses, not only to Ender, but to herself. When the game becomes violent, and Peter threatens Ender’s life, claiming that no one would think Peter guilty, Valentine steps in

The war between the buggers and humanity has ended, yet Ender has lost all happiness. Throughout the novel, the Battle School tested Ender through a series of games. Whether the games be face-to-face or through a computer, these games have had meaning. The games have impacted Ender’s entire life. A continual theme throughout Card's novel is that games do not exist in opposition to reality. The author shows that every action has a meaning. Even when the action has been manipulated, changed, or not understood, it still has a meaning to it. In all of the games that Ender played, each one was unfair or misunderstood. In these circumstances, Ender must think about the big picture and not the small details. On top of that, Ender tends to hurt his…

There are many memories that may come to mind when the word adolescence is spoken. Some people recall times of enjoyable, innocent adventures, but for others the phrase “teenage years” holds horrific memories. For a section of the populace their “teen experiences” may be the most appalling time period, as they begin to undergo many changes. This concept of dark adolescence is present, not only in the real world, but in the literary world as well. For example, in the novel A Separate Peace where a friendship turned in the wrong direction and a deadly war, mark the moments of growing up. While some readers believe that Phineas (Finny) and Gene’s separate peace shows the innocence of youthful occurrences; a closer inquiry demonstrates that through mental illness and death , adolescence is a time of terror, thus showing a theme of the realization of reality.…
