Cheer Gym
Dear Mr. ____ ,
As a cheerleader and student at Campo Verde, I purpose we add a cheer gym to our growing school. I believe that adding a cheer gym will benefit not only the cheerleaders but also other athletes. Adding a cheer gym to Campo Verde High would create a separate practice space, keep mats in one place, and allow for more practice time.
A cheer gym will create a separate practice space away from everyone else. Currently, the cheerleaders and I practice in the cafeteria. It is unsanitary to practice in there. As we stunt and try new things, the signs are in our way and that can cause a safety hazard. Our coach, Coach Kimi, is constantly up in the front office. She fights for space and practice times for us. We have been stuck in the cafeteria since the beginning of basketball season and we are tired of it. Other athletes complain about us pushing the mats into the mini gym during their practice time.
In order to keep the heavy mats in one place, we should add a cheer gym. The mats take up a decent amount of room in the mini gym, even if they are pushed all the way into the corner. The cheer gym will keep them safe from damage and way from other athletes who do not want to look at them. Some cheerleaders have gotten injured from pushing the mats too far. The distance between the mini gym and the cafeteria is too far to be pushing seven mats back and forth.
Practice time can be more flexible with a cheer gym. Practices would be longer or shorter and on more days. The cheerleaders and I could also practice in the morning without actually having to get into the school. Having longer practices allows more time for stretching and conditioning, which both prevent injuries. Stretching is important because it allows you to loosen up our muscles and become more flexible. Conditioning is important also because it builds up the cheerleader’s stamina and muscles that we need in our routine. With a cheer gym, we will be able to stretch and run to our hearts content.

The walls, bleachers, and other hard surfaces around the gym present the possibility for injury in a ‘hockey’ like unit. Because there are no side boundaries in the game (walls are in play) it would be dangerous for two or more students to race to the ball for possession when it is near a wall.…

It is comprised of people and opportunities that allow rams to have fun, be healthy, and learn new things. Our job is to make sure that our ram family has facilities to use at whatever time is convenient for their schedules; as well as a staff that can support their needs quickly and efficiently. The gym is by far the most popular facility operated by Rec Sports. Because of this, there are three main areas of staff needed for it to operate: Service Attendant (SA), Weight Room Attendant (WRA), and the managers who oversee everything. Managers and SA’s normally deal with duties at the front desk relating to sign in and item checkouts, while WRA’s make sure the gym is presentable and easily available for use by any patron who wishes to use them. The positions are dependent on one another to maintain a functioning facility that provides the utmost service to all patrons who use it. Due to the this, we all have a special relationship between one another in the workplace. Although we are all coworkers and move as a team together, there are a number of issues present internally that affect how we communicate and treat one another, particularly managers and…

It teaches the importance of certain life qualities and some lessons to take away. The cheerleaders compete at compititions against other teams. Knowing this information still makes people indecisive in their decision of if cheer qualifies as a sport. According to Eileen Lofrese (Macedo, 2010, para. 10-11), most people can’t decide whether cheer is a sport or not because of its inconsistency. Some schools may only have a cheer team that cheers at games, but other schools have a competitive varsity team. Coach Stevens (personal communication, January 20, 2016) says that she believes cheer is a sport that isn’t fully developed yet. She…

There is a big difference between school cheer and competitive cheer. School cheer should not necessarily be called a sport. Sports teams exist to compete, not to entertain or perform while supporting another group that is competing. Cheer was created to get the crowd excited and wound up. One of the requirements of a sport is to compete against an opponent, not cheer your team on and for sure not support you opponent. Even though cheerleaders have after-school practices and even participate in cheering for a team, to be qualified as a sport you must know the real definition of a…

Cheerleading is typically, in the United States, a year round competitive sport that includes at least three sports seasons. The typical sport starts beginning of summer with the usual stunting camp, then fall, winter, and spring. Sometimes though it isn’t just for four years of high school and then it is over. According to George GS (1990) most cheerleaders start at an early age and is estimated to include over a million participants between the ages of elementary school and professional cheerleaders for sports teams. As you can see not only is cheerleading a ten month sport but if a person decides to start at the age of five until the age of twenty-five then they will have done cheer for two hundred months out of their cheerleading careers. Out of this time these kids have also been in school which calls for studying, time with friends, and once they hit the age of sixteen or seventeen they are giving up some time of not working. Every year the school work is getting harder and it seems as if more and more homework just appears. Between the usual times of after practice and bed time…

There are many negative stereotypes against cheerleaders and cheerleading itself. There is a high risk of injury. Cheerleaders have to train to be fit and strong and are pressured into staying that way. In Spokane Valley, Washington there is a national competitive cheerleading gym. This gym is called Build It Athletics. It’s ran by Tara Ernst. It’s a public cheerleading association that helps girls train for the future, and they form teams to enter competitions. In order to make their highest ranking team, one must be able to run a mile under 7 minutes to be able to demonstrate their ability to meet the requirements for stunting, cheering, dancing and tumbling (Ernst). No girl or boy can lift a 135 pound girl into the air with the right training. These athletes perform standing back flips, round flips, and full layout twists. Cheerleaders also perform a different amount of lifts and tosses. This is where the “fliers” are thrown into the air, held by “bases” in different positions that require strength, communication, and cooperation with other teammates (Ernst). Various squads hold about five to six practices a week to stay on top of their main goal, to win that first prize trophy. Like any other sport, cheerleading involves high physical activity (Ernst). As I talked with Tara, she stated that “These girls and boys are under a lot of pressure, not only from the long practicing, and the strain it puts on your body, but from society. Society expects cheerleaders…
