Chemistry and its Relation to the Nursing Field Chemistry is an important part of our everyday lives. We often don’t realize this, but we apply chemistry in all aspects of life. Chemistry deals with the identification of the substances of which matter is composed. Having a good understanding of chemistry will enable you to better understand all other physical sciences. Nursing is a health care science profession that deals with providing care for the sick or incapacitated. Nurses have a variety of duties assigned to them. In order to be able to handle each one, they must be familiar with a variety of subjects, one of which is chemistry. There are four main chemistry courses for most nursing majors: general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and pharmacology. General chemistry gives nursing students an understanding of the elements that make up everything around us. This course will typically cover areas such as the periodic table of elements, states of matter, bonds, and chemical equations. Knowing the different elements and electrolytes (such as sodium, potassium, carbon dioxide, oxygen, etc.) in the human body can aid a nurse in understanding the condition of a …show more content…
Nurses will be dealing with these chemical processes daily with each patient, so this information is important for a nursing student to know. Pharmacology is an advanced chemistry course offered to nursing students that teaches about many types of drugs and their reactions to the human body and other drugs. One of the many tasks a nurse performs daily is administering medication. It is a nurse’s responsibility to be aware of how medicines can react to symptoms, and how some medicines can complement or react harmfully with each
