Dear all

I am writing to ask for your help with a life-changing experience: International YMCA Global Teens. Global Teens is a dynamic youth program that challenges young people to engage in the journey of global exploration and cultural immersion. Teen participants accomplish this through interacting with teens and adults from their host location, participating in a meaningful community service project, and learning about different cultures through a short-term immersion experience. This year Global Teens will travel to California, Chile, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and South Africa. The International YMCA Global Teens program strives to promote peace, tolerance and cultural understanding, while encouraging teens to become true global citizens.

As you know, today’s young people face tremendous challenges. The International YMCA is working hard to give teenagers the resources they need to overcome these challenges and to reach their full potential. But we can’t do it alone, the YMCA does not have sufficient funding to provide financial aid for all participants. For this reason each teen needs to do their own fundraising in order to ensure that they are able to afford the trip. I need your help for the 2013 Global Teens program to raise $2477 in order to travel to Chile and participate in an arts focused service-learning project working with the Mapuche community.

I truly hope that you will consider a gift that will help me to join the Global Teens program this year. You may wish to send your contribution directly to me, mail it to the International YMCA (5 West 63rd Street, NY, NY 10023) and reference my name, or make a general contribution to the International YMCA Global Teens Program. However you choose to make your gift, you will enable a teen to have a positive life-changing experience. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely, ya boi

This non-profit organization uses both rhetorical and symbolic means of galvanizing its membership. Rhetorically, the Boys and Girls Club has celebrated its volunteers and members alike. In the artifacts shown, the Club has verbally and publicly celebrated the people that make the organization great. They have vocalized how thankful they are for their volunteers in the APD and “Volunteer Spotlight” posts. The club has also showcased the members of the club by celebrating the kids championship status and a teenage Club member’s performance. The Club does not only galvanize its membership only rhetorically, but symbolically as well. In 1949 the Boys and Girls Club established a program to recognize the outstanding achievements of Club Teens.…

Throughout the past few years I have taken part in many projects and activities to foster education and global engagement. The most recent is my upcoming outreach trip to the Agnes Zabali Boys and Girls Club. This trip was planned by myself, 3 other education students and our faculty supervisor. The purpose of this trip is to provide support for the Agnes Zabali Boys and Girls Club (AZBGC). As Education students, we are taking this opportunity to provide daily lessons for the children who visit the Boys and Girls Club. We started the planning in September and we have put in over 120 hours since then in order to make this trip as beneficial for the children at the AZBGC. Apart of this planning, we have raised funds to help support the children's’ education costs. While planning for this outreach trip, I decided to partner with a local grade seven class to teach them about social justice. Their classroom teacher told me that with the recent media attention in the USA she is having difficulty teaching her students about justice and discrimination. We decided to partner together to teach both the Ugandan Children as well as the Canadian grade seven class about what it is like to live in a different part of the world. This partnership will entail writing letters to each other as well as creating a video about life in each of their respective locations.…

After being a part of Key Club throughout my high school years, I learned how to give back to the community that has raised me and the conspicuous impact I can have in someone’s life simply through volunteering. Through Key Club, I help create service projects with local organizations and give members of our club an opportunity to volunteer and give back. One experience I will never forget is helping set up a blood drive in school with one of our local organizations, Bloodworks Northwest, a local blood bank that helps saves lives through research, innovation and education in blood. Our Key Club had to inform the school of the event that was happening, and encourage students to donate blood. It required hours of creating posters, informing the…

Did you know that teens can make a huge difference in our world? Teen activists all have a reason why they began what they did and how they began doing it. The Boys and Girls Club of America helps thousands of Americans each year as a daycare, escape from home, way to meet new friends or to eat a sustainable meal that they wouldn’t be able to get at home. Another way that the Boys and Girls Club benefits kids is by having organized sports where the players can develop competitiveness, teamwork and become coachable. As someone who volunteers at the Boys and Girls Club I am able to experience all of the good that goes on both within and outside of business hours. As I wrap up my high school career and go on to the next stage in my life I often find myself looking back at not only those who helped shaped me into the person I am today but also the extracurricular activities I participated in. The Boys and Girls Club is one thing that continually pops into my head with the activities I partook in as well as the children and adults alike, without these experiences I would not have devolved my love for basketball, been so willing to give back to the community, or have been showed the do’s and don’ts of parenting.…
